About me

Counselling and psychotherapy in London Bridge and Borough

Welcome to my directory page. My name is Richard Demwell and I am qualified, registered and accredited psychodynamic counsellor and psychotherapist.

I work with adults offering short term / time limited counselling and longer term, open ended psychotherapy.

I have many years experience of providing counselling and psychotherapy in different organisational settings. These include working for several years within an NHS psychotherapy department, a charity setting and within a university student counselling service. More recently I have worked with older adults in an IAPT funded charity. I am also experienced in clinical assessment for therapy.

My consulting room offers a comfortable, confidential and secure space for you to explore your concerns. It is easily accessible within the area of London Bridge, Borough and Elephant and Castle. There are four steps in total to enter the property where you can then use a lift to reach my room if needed.

Initial consultation: an initial extended session to discuss your concerns

This allows you time to explore your concerns with me, and for us to think about your needs. It will also give you the chance to see if you want to work with me and how we might want to proceed with any future sessions. It is a good opportunity for you to ask any questions you may have about the process of therapy, or indeed, to consider what other options may be appropriate for you before deciding to commit to meeting again. An initial consultation can help you gain a grasp of your of needs, collect your thoughts, and begin to understand what is troubling you.

If you decide to have an initial consultation with me, you are under no obligation to commit to therapy at this stage. I understand that contacting a therapist can be a difficult and anxiety provoking decision. Please be assured that any contact with me is confidential and I am bound by the BACP's ethical framework to work with you respectfully and safely. If we both agree to move forward to setting up an agreement, we can discuss my fees and my terms. It is important you feel confident and satisfied with our agreement before we proceed. We will review our work together at various stages during your contract with me.

Counselling and therapy

Following an initial consultation, and having discussed your needs in depth, I may suggest short term counselling or psychotherapy on an open-ended basis with no fixed end date. It may be that we choose to schedule a few sessions in the first instance to think about your needs.

Sessions are held weekly, at the same time and location, and run for 50 minutes. I encourage you to bring whatever is on your mind to your sessions. This enables us to explore your concerns in a way that unfolds and allows for new understandings to be made. This is less structured than some other forms of therapy such as solution-focused therapies and cognitive behavioral approaches. I will rarely offer advice and will not request you to complete tasks or homework. A psychodynamic approach encourages you to be self-reflective and suits people who want learn more about themselves and their relationships.

I am a recognised practitioner with the following Employee Assistance Programmes (E.A.P) and medical health care providers -
AXA PPP , AVIVA, Allianz, Cigna and WPA

I adhere to the BACP's Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
