Profile
I offer you a warm, compassionate and non judgemental relationship in which to explore your concerns both past and present. As a qualified and experienced counseller, I help you work to make changes or find better coping strategies and get greater satisfaction in your life. My work is also strictly confidential within the boundaries of the law and the BACP Ethical Framework.
Why come for counselling?
Contacting a counsellor is often the most difficult step in your journey and the reasons people come to counselling are as varied as the individual themselves.
You may have:
- experienced a bereavement, or a loss such as disability or ill-health or you may be going through a crises such as divorce or redundancy.
Perhaps you:
- feel unappreciated and undervalued.
- are struggling with feelings of low self-esteem or feelings of anger
- find that present or past relationships are painful and you just somehow can't let go of those feelings
- have lost interest in things that you previously enjoyed.
Normal feelings such as anger, frustration and grief that do not pass in time can sometimes lead to depression and anxiety. Often we feel confused, isolated and even ashamed of these feelings and are unable to talk to friends and family about what really concerns us.
Talking to a counsellor who is open, accepting and non-judgemental can help resolve those feelings and help you get back onto a more even path. Counselling need not necessarily be long term but it does take time to work through complex problems that are long-standing.
About me and my practice
I have been working as a counsellor since 2007. I see private clients at home in the central Nottinghamshire village of Maplebeck which is a short distance from Newark, Ollerton and Southwell. I can also see clients at the offices of Counselling Extra in Pelham Road Nottingham, NG5. Please contact me for details of my availability.
After we have arranged a meeting, I will email or send you some information as to how I work, and also a questionnaire that give me an idea as to why you want to for counselling and what you hope to achieve. This helps me to understand whether I am the right counsellor for you and also saves time in our first session together.
Although my way of working is flexible, I am firmly rooted in the Humanist counselling tradition which means that you, the client, are in control and we discuss the issues that you consider to be most important. I can work in a short-term focussed way using techiques drawn from Solution-focussed therapy and Coaching for a limited number of session. Or alternatively, we can work at greater depth in an open-ended manner where we renegotiate how many session you want on a rolling basis.

If there is anything more you would like to know please do not hesitate to phone or email me. I may not be able to answer your call immediately but please leave me a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
My qualifications
I believe it is important to ensure that a counsellor that you choose is suitably qualified and experience. My principal counselling qualification is:
- BA Hons in Humanistic Counselling Practice from the University of Nottingham
My primary training was in Person-Centred Counselling but I have also undertaken training in Transactional Analysis (TA) both at University and with the Berne Institute.
I have recently attended training on Guided Imagery and Visualisation (provided by the Human Givens Institute) which I have incorporated into my practice. It is a useful tool for relaxation which helps to bring down stress levels which encourages rational thought and decision making. In addition, it can be used to visualise changes and also to manage pain.
For clients who want short-term therapy I use techinques drawn from Solution-focussed therapy and from coaching to help think about and implement change in your life.
The certificates of my qualifications and training, membership of the BACP and my insurance are available for you to see should you wish to do so.
My experience
In addition to my private practice, I have experience working as a counsellor in a variety of settings which include a doctor's surgery, New College, Nottingham (a Further Education college) as well as various different Counselling agencies including Cruse, the national bereavement organisation.
I am now eligible for BACP acceditation which is awarded to counsellors and psychotherapists who have 'achieved a substantial level of training and experience'.
I am passionate about helping people achieve their potential and overcoming the difficulties they face in life and have worked for most of my adult life as a trainer, facilitator, adviser and counsellor. I am also a member of the Coaching Division of the BACP and also the Institute of Lifelong Learning.
