About me

My name is Phillip Whittington and I am a UKCP accredited Psychotherapeutic Counsellor & EMDR trauma therapist with over twelve years of experience in individual, couples counselling and trauma work. I am also a clinical supervisor and I currently have both group and individual places available for supervision.

Why you may be considering therapy

Individuals or couples generally come to me if they are experiencing problems in the areas of love, health, work or play. The working through of these issues often reduces symptoms and enables people to live fuller lives. Other reasons for entering into therapy could be that the individual has suffered a traumatic experience or some sort of abuse at some point in their life.

Examples of this could be

  • That they have been a victim of abuse (physical, emotional or sexual)
  • That they have been involved in some sort of traumatic or life threatening incident
  • That they have spent a prolonged period of time in a stressful or dangerous environment
  • That they have been involved in a relationship with someone with a manipulative or controlling personality style
  • That they have been involved in active military service or been in close contact with others who have

What does a counsellor do?

Counsellors help people to explore feelings and emotions that are often related to their experiences. This allows their clients to reflect on what is happening to them and consider alternative ways of doing things. Working in a confidential setting, counsellors listen attentively to their clients and offer them the time, empathy and respect they need to express their feelings and perhaps understand themselves from a different perspective. The aim is to reduce their confusion and enable them to cope with challenges, or to make positive changes in their life where necessary.

In addition to the above, Psychotherapeutic Counsellors such as myself often assist the client with the analysis of complex processes and problems that contribute to a reduced level of well-being. The processes involved could be related to childhood experiences or as a result of trauma or abuse. The therapeutic relationship that develops between a therapist and client offers a unique and confidential environment in which these complex processes can be safely approached.
In relation to trauma relief and PTSD I also offer EMDR therapy as a method of approaching and resolving these difficult feelings and experiences.

EMDR is typically short term work (6-8 sessions) and my fee for EMDR is £50 per hour.
