Sunbury On Thames
My name is Phil.
I am an Individual and Couple Counsellor - MBACP Registered and Accredited.
I qualified as a counsellor in 2005. I then joined Relate and trained and worked as a couple counsellor, in addition to my counselling work with individual clients. I often do short-term counselling, this is normally six to eight sessions. However, some issues will take longer and I do work with clients where time is needed to unravel issues or support them through a critical time.
When and Where Can You Find me?
I work on Saturday mornings and afternoons and Monday and Friday evenings.
My counselling rooms are located in Sunbury on Thames near the river. There is ample free parking on the site and the bus stops from Kingston, Ashford and Staines are 5 minutes from my counselling rooms.
My Approach to Counselling
In my counselling practice with individuals and couples I concentrate on working with a few specific issues (details below) rather than attempting to deal with a wide range of conditions. This makes my work more focused and beneficial.
In 2013, I became interested in employment related issues such as bullying, depression, redundancy and stress and generally issues related to problems people encounter in their employment and where it intrudes on other aspects of their lives. I have worked extensively with an employment assistance organisation and this has given me experience in dealing with a wide variety of issues for people in all walks of life.
Over the years, I have become aware that loss - of a relationship, health, occupation, the loss of almost anything can be at the heart of why one comes to counselling. Early in my counselling career I trained with CRUSE, the UK’s main bereavement counselling organisation, this has also helped broaden my knowledge and experience in dealing with clients who have experienced a loss.
The professional body I joined to support and help my work is the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). I achieved Accredited Membership status in 2011 and am registered as a practitioner with them, meaning that I abide by their code of professional ethics. This requires me to continually update my training to maintain its relevance and to be supervised.
I do not believe that one theoretical approach fits all clients and all issues at all times
I am what is termed an Integrative Counsellor. I do not believe that one theoretical approach fits all clients and all issues at all times. Some approaches have a better statistical track record and it would be imprudent not to consider them first. But people are different and what works for one person or couple may not appeal or look so helpful to others. To become a little technical, I do work from cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic, person centred approaches and I find transactional analysis very helpful in relationship and communication issues. I work collaboratively with my clients and we adjust how we work based on their feedback on what is helping them and how things are developing as the sessions progress.
Since 2007 I have also been teaching counselling students on certificate and diploma courses. I enjoy this work, interacting with students keeps me in touch with the latest developments and approaches in counselling and the need for my work to be fresh and relevant.
