About me

Counselling

Sensitive, empathic, supportive, discrete and non-judgemental.  I offer a safe place for you to explore whatever may be going on in your life right now or in the past or future.

Life can sometimes deal us some difficult hands; depression, anxiety (including generalised anxiety disorder/GAD), low self esteem, family issues, relationship issues, addiction, self harm, workplace stress, illness and life transitions such as redundancy or retirement plus many more. It can be difficult to know where to turn when we are faced with these issues which is why talking to someone who is trained to help can be helpful.

I can help you to explore and to express how you are feeling. Sometimes just this process can be highly effective. Often it is useful to explore how past experiences have shaped how we are today. Other times I may use cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) to help address self limiting or thought patterns or ways of behaving which are doing damage. Sometimes what surfaces during counselling isn’t what you expect but can lead to beneficial changes.

About Me

I am an experienced, sensitive and empathic counsellor and have been qualified since 2005.  I spent many years in a technical based office environment later moving to a more people based role and going part time so I could build my counselling business.  I have a wide range of counselling experience gained in NHS Primary Care (GP Surgery), 6th Form Colleges, Drug & Alcohol Addiction Counselling Service and Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Eventually I left the corporate world with it’s high pressure deadline driven culture and now I am undergoing further training in psychotherapy with Re-Vision in London.  This training allows me to bring together my long held interests in both the spiritual and soul based aspects of therapy and modern advances in neuroscience and looking at our relationship with the natural world.  Additionally I am interested in working with those who identify as Highly Sensitive Persons (HSP).

I currently work at Alton Counselling Service and for the NHS with IAPT and in my own private practice in Alton.  Many years past experience of working with The Samaritans means that I am experienced at working via telephone.

I work with men and women and young people of all backgrounds, religions, beliefs and ethnicities. My aim is to work collaboratively with you so that we can determine what your needs may be and how they can be addressed.

I specialise in working with depression, anxiety, low self esteem, addiction, anger and working with the highly sensitive person (HSP).

What Next

To get started just send me an email or text or phone me.  If I don’t answer straight away then I may be working so please leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as I can.  We can then arrange an initial consultation so that we can get to meet one another. From there we would look to arrange weekly sessions at a time that suits you.  These are usually face to face in my pleasant counselling room in Alton although I can also offer telephone counselling if face to face is not practical.

I am happy to work either open ended (as many sessions as you feel you would like) of more short term if you prefer. I offer face to face counselling with adults 17 years of age and above. Please see my main web site for further details.

If you are wondering if counselling is right for you then please call or text me on 07712 778 710 or email me on info@petesmithcounselling.co.uk

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified with an Advanced Diploma In Humanistic Counselling in 2005.  This qualified me to work with a variety of counselling models including Person Centred, Gestalt and Transactional Analysis.  I have also studied Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) at the prestigious Oxford Cognitive Therapy Centre (OCTC).

I became accredited with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) in 2010.  I have DBS (Police) clearance.  I abide by the BACP code of ethics and confidentiality.

I am currently undertaking further study in Integrative Transpersonal Psychotherapy from a Soulful Perspective.  This means that I draw upon various models including Jungian, Gestalt, body and archetypal psychologies as well as psychodynamic theory, developmental theory and neuroscience. The transpersonal includes working with myth and story, the imagination, dreams and imagery and spiritual dimensions.
