About me

I am trained as an 'integrative' counsellor, principally integrating 'person-centred' and 'psychodynamic' ways of working with you, the client. Further to this training I commonly introduce clients to the concepts contained in the Transactional Analysis (TA) model of behaviour and personality. This is a comprehensive model, but an example of one of the most readily recognised concepts is the idea that a person's mind is in either a parent, adult or child state (called an ego-state) at any one moment in time. Also central to TA is the idea of 'script', which relates to the habits of behaviours, thoughts and feelings which were initially set up in childhood in response to the parenting we experienced.

It is common to find that there are underlying issues behind the issue which you initially present as the reason for coming to counselling.

The fundamental key to a successful client/counsellor relationship is mutual trust, which builds over time. Typically it can take around 3 sessions for the initial level of trust to be adequately evaluated and cemented, and we review the situation and how to proceed at that point. We ensure that you have full autonomy and independence throughout the counselling process. However, the aim is that you will experience a balance of challenge and support. You do the work but I will guide, encourage and support you. I work in accordance with the 'BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice'.

I work with clients long term (6 to 18 months) or short term (6 weeks to 6 months).
