About me

I am a Registered MBACP (Accred) experienced therapist and supervisor with a broad range of counselling experience over 17 years, working with individual adults and couples providing both short-term and long-term face to face counselling.

Availability Statement

I work face to face (F2F) and am also fully qualified to deliver counselling and supervision online (telephone and online platforms) being a Senior Professional Member and Supervisor with the Association for Counselling & Therapy Online (ACTO Level 3) using the learning outcomes that are mapped to the BACP competences for telephone and e-counselling.  I have a limited availability but please contact me to discuss support in any of the means that you are available to use.

I offer an Integrated, developmental-relational therapeutic approach providing individuals and couples with a warm, accepting and genuine environment in which they can explore issues, clarify choices and make decisions.

My aim is that through therapy you will achieve greater decision making in your life. In gaining some understanding of your inner world, I can help facilitate a period of acceptance and change by enabling you to talk about emotional difficulties and periods of crisis.

Within the past 17 years I have supported people who have worked on a wide range of issues. These have included;

  • Anxiety
  • Low self esteem

  • Depression

  • Identity crisis

  • Relationship issues

  • Sexuality issues

  • Disability issues

  • Loss and bereavement

  • Work and career related issues

  • Loss of meaning or direction

  • Post-Traumatic Stress – including military service personnel

  • Military Service Issues - OOA detachments, Operational tours, Family Life, etc.

  • Rape and Childhood Sexual Abuse

  • Self-harm
  • Dissociation Identity Disorder (DID)

As an accredited registered member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy - MBACP (Accred) I am bound by its ethical framework and subject to its Complaints Procedure. I am also a member of the United Kingdom Association for Psychotherapy Integration (UKAPI).

I am in ongoing professional supervision in accordance with the BACP ethical framework.

I can offer to see clients during the daytime as well as outside of normal working hours.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have 17 years' experience in the field, having been trained in integrative counselling and psychotherapy. I work with a wide range of clients, both individuals and couples, dealing with short-term challenges through to deep-rooted historical issues requiring longer term therapy.

I have also long-term experience working with dissociation of both male and female survivors of rape and childhood sexual abuse, along with using my long RAF career, experience and understanding of the military to work with serving and veterans who have mental health issues.

My academic training includes a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and a further degree in Integrative Counselling from the University of Hull. I also trained as a UKCP Integrative Psychotherapist, meaning that I am able to draw on a range of approaches in working with my clients ranging from exploring how their past experiences, such as childhood, are influencing the present, through to understanding how people make meaning in their lives.

I also hold PG diplomas in Body Language, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT).

I am also trained to work with:

IAPT L1 and L2 Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).  This is an empirically based psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies mixed in different ways with commitment and behaviour-change strategies, to increase psychological flexibility.

Association for Psychological Therapies (APT) L3 (Accredited) Dialectical Behaviour Therapist (DBT).  This is aimed to help a client understand and accept difficult feelings, learning skills to manage them and become able to make positive changes in life - primarily for working with Borderline Personality Disorder, self harm and binge eating.

Association for Psychological Therapies (APT) L3 (Accredited) Compassion Focused Therapist (CFT). Developed by Dr Paul Gilbert to integrate techniques from CBT with concepts of evolutionary psychology, social psychology, developmental psychology and neuroscience - primarily for working with high shame and self-criticism.

I have completed the European Society for Trauma and Dissociation (ESTD), UK Network Foundation Course in Dissociation and Trauma.

I worked for 8 years within a counselling service for the NHS 'Let's Talk' Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) banner.

I am involved with several employers with the Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) internationally, nationally and locally.

I also provide Mental Health Wellbeing Mentoring Support to students at several universities nationally and locally.

Supervision:

As a qualified CPCAB L6 therapeutic supervisor, my model is based on Hawkins and Shohet’s "7 eyed model" working with, holding and considering the 7 focus/aspects of therapeutic work of: the client; the interventions; the client and therapist relationship; the therapist’s process; the therapist-supervisor relationship; the supervisor’s process; the wider context (both organisational and societal) within which the counselling is taking place.

Additionally, I also use aspects of Page and Wosket’s, 1994 "Cyclical model" which incorporates:

1. Contract – between stakeholders, for the supervision.

2. Focus – for the work and the session.

3. Space – for reflection, exploration, emergence.

4. Bridge – from supervision back to coaching.

5. Review – of the supervision session, relationship, contract, etc.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

Due to my counselling room being on the third floor there is lift access from street level. There is a waiting area if you arrive early. There is car parking across the road (Albion Street Car Park) and many bus stops directly outside the building.
