Paul V. Ricketts
I am a registered psychotherapeutic counsellor and dance movement psychotherapist offering a friendly, sensitive and professional service to adult clients, couples and groups of all ages and backgrounds. I have 12 years full, part time and voluntary experience working in a variety of public sector and charitable organisations. In addition to my independent work for Quiet Mindz, I deliver psychotherapeutic counselling for a private therapy group in Worcestershire and freelance dance movement psychotherapy for an arts charity in Birmingham.
In my psychotherapeutic counselling practice, I have worked with a range of clients and a wide range of problems including depression, anxiety, stress, loss, managing difficult feelings, trauma, relationship and identity issues. I have gained much of my experience working with complex cases in an NHS setting, in either short, medium or long term modes of working - working WITH my clients to make meaningful and sustainable changes to their lives.
I have extensive training in humanistic counselling, gestalt psychotherapy, developmental and somatic psychotherapy, and relational living body psychotherapy and I usually get a sense of what combination of these approaches will help you in our initial meeting. After building a relationship and gaining my own understanding of what your difficulties are, I provide a safe environment for difficult thoughts and feelings to be spoken about, evaluated and changed. Over time you will gradually come to a new, more helpful understanding about what, how and why you think and feel. My approach (based on the complex relationship between mind and body) focuses on how psychological and emotional issues are manifested in the body, it's processes and how that affects how we deal with psychological and emotional difficulties and therefore our relationships and ways of relating, and vice versa.
In shorter-term psychotherapeutic counselling engagements I have found the best strategy is to focus on supporting you to use your existing strengths and resources in new ways. Longer-term work provides the opportunity for working through more entrenched difficulties supporting you to make often subtle but important changes in your life.
I work with individuals and couples offering short or medium term focused work and quite often clients who come to see me have 6 - 8 sessions, and others long-term in-depth psychotherapeutic counselling. With 12 years post qualifying experience and 10 years in the NHS working with a range of clients, as a psychotherapeutic counsellor I am able to work at depth with clients who present with either one or more complex issues at a deeper psychological and emotional level.
I offer you a safe therapeutic, creative and enlivening environment where I will work WITH you to support greater personal empowerment to be freer, be more positive and be more choice-full in your life.
You do not need a referral from a GP to make an appointment with me.
Coming to see me does not always have to be about the problems or difficulties you are facing - it can also help enhance your life by talking through your aspirations to promote personal growth and self-development.
FREE: No obligation, 30 minute initial consultation
I have experience of working with organisations, institutions and companies offering employees an alternative to existing employee assistance programmes; including group therapy, individual therapy, creative approaches, mindfulness and body focussed therapy.
I also offer a consultancy service to organisations, institutions and companies who require assistance in exploring and understanding any communication or relationship difficulties employees may have using an integrated movement observation analysis based on Laban Movement Analysis (LMA), Kestenberg Movement Profile (KMP) and semiotics. I can also offer movement based group work to explore those difficulties or to explore and develop the creative or communicative potential of their employees.
I describe my practice in psychotherapeutic counselling as humanistic and integrative in orientation.
Humanistic simply means that I work with you as a whole human being, a person, a person who we believe has the postive human potential to improve their life and living should they wish or want to.
Integrative means that I integrate, as appropriate, various techniques, skills etc from a range of counselling and psychotherapeutic approaches, but my overall approach is influenced largely by Humanistic and particularly Gestalt Psychotherapy
Dance Movement Psychotherapy
In addition to my practice as a psychotherapeutic counsellor, I am also a qualified and experienced Movement Psychotherapist with 10 years post qualifying experience of working with a range of groups using a specialised form of psychotherapy or group therapy based on movement, creative art materials and verbal dialogue.
I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), and also on the Private Practice register of the Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy (ADMP-UK). I abide by their respective codes of ethics and am subject to their complaints procedures.
A good way to find out more about who I am and what I can do for you is to call for a free, no-obligation 30 minute consultation. It is important for our work that you are happy and comfortable with the service I provide. I am happy to offer this in person rather than on the phone as it serves the process of assessment for each of us far better. Since I am sometimes with other clients or teaching I may not always be able to pick up the phone, but I will always try to return calls as soon as I can. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope to hear from you soon, best wishes, Paul.
