Pat Creamer MBACP Senior Accredited Counsellor
Hello and welcome to my profile,
I know how daunting looking for a therapist can be, so let me tell you a few things about myself and my work.
I have over 20 years experience and over that time have worked with a huge variety of people and many different issues and difficulties. This has included anxiety, depression, stress, bereavement, relationship issues, low self-esteem and issues arising from childhood abuse issues.
As a counsellor I provide a safe and confidential space for you to be listened to and explore whatever you are struggling with emotionally in your life. You may be wanting to explore specific difficulties, such as problems at home, at work or in relationships. You may be trying to come to terms with a recent life crisis, event or loss. You may be anxious or depressed, upset, distressed or overwhelmed or be struggling with feelings that you just don't understand.
I see counselling as a shared activity, where we both commit ourselves to working at making sense of things and working towards desired change. Often we may work at bringing together past and present experiences, but not always. I offer short, medium and long term therapy.
I respect each person as a unique individual, with their own life journey and set of experiences.
If you thought that counselling with me might be helpful to you, we could arrange an initial meeting. At that meeting we would look together at what you were hoping for, what might be possible, whether counselling is the right step for you and whether we could work together.
I work from a room in my house, especially set apart for my counselling work, in a quiet cul-de-sac, near Temple Newsam Park, Leeds
I also work as a clinical supervisor for other counsellors and offer non-managerial suprvision and consultative support, particularly to those in the caring professions.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a Senior Accredited Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. To become accredited is demanding and requires levels of training, experience, professional ethics, personal therapy and a commitment to ongoing professional development. I trained initially at Manchester Polytechinic (now Manchester Metropolitan University) where I gained a Diploma in Counselling and have since added a Certificate in Couples Counselling & a Diploma in Supervision from Leeds Psychotherapy Training Institute.
I have continued to extend my knowledge by attending many training courses and workshops.
My counselling approach might best be desribed as integrative and is underpinned by the psychodynamic and person-centred approaches. I have also undertaken training in what might be described as more problem solving approaches; CBT, Solution Focused Therapy and Brief Therapy and weave them into my work as appropriate.
I have worked in Independent Practice for the last 5years and previously spent a significant part of my counselling career working at Leeds Mind Counselling and Therapy Service and was the Senior Counsellor there for 10 years.
I have worked with clients who have referred themselves for counselling, those referred by their GPs, their employers and with students.
Like most counsellors, I have had one to one therapy myself. This has helped me to know myself better and hepls me to understand what being a client might be like.
I would also want to recognise the knowledge I have gained from working with clients over the years, they have taught me a great deal.
