I specialise in CBT for the management of chronic health issues. I am an experienced and fully qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. As well as general issues, I work and specialise in the management and treatment of the following Chronic Health Conditions: CFS/M.E, PVF, Fibromyalgia, Functional Neurological Disorders, Vestibular rehabilitation for dizziness, Genetic Disorders, Autoimmune Disorders and Chronic Pain Conditions.
In addition I also specialise in supporting carers support people that are struggling physically.
For the more practical side of recovery and management of chronic health conditions, I am fully trained in Graded Exercise Therapy for chronic pain and fatigue, neurological rehabilitation strategies and qualified in vestibular rehabilitation for inner ear disorders.
Why CBT sessions when I have physical health issues?
Chronic diseases, pain and fatigue can be associated with high levels of new uncertainty. Sufferers unfortunately have to change their behaviour as part of a new lifestyle of self-care. Some people also have to endure debilitating and demanding forms of treatments or management strategies. These are some of the factors that make adjustment to chronic medical conditions psychologically and emotionally demanding.
It is generally accepted that because of this psychological and emotional demand that around a quarter of sufferers with chronic medical problems also have clinically significant anxiety and depression. In some cases it is also the other way around and forms of anxiety and depression can themselves be associated with physical morbidity.
Sometimes our coping and management strategies for chronic medical health issues are not always the most helpful for us in the long term for management or recovery. CBT can challenge these behaviours and ensure the most helpful management interventions are engaged to help us reduce or manage our symptoms in the most effective manner possible.CBT can also help separate out what symptoms are primary and what symptoms are secondary and of emotional and psychological nature.CBT interventions for chronic health issues should be evidence based and have well known positive therapeutic outcomes.
Specialist health CBT also focuses on practical strategies and interventions with solid and safe evidence bases for the management of difficult symptoms such as pain and fatigue. An example of this is Graded Exercise Therapy for those suffering from CFS/M.E and Vestibular rehabilitation for those suffering with ongoing dizziness post viral.
With all these interventions combined, people can feel in a much safer place and feel that they can cope with their ongoing chronic condition or even overcome existing issues.
My daily clinics are based in Cyncoed Consulting Rooms, Cardiff and Therapy Works, Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan. I also lecture in Bath University on CBT interventions for CFS/M.E recovery and management.
