P. Elaine Burberry
Chester Le Street
Allendale, Nr Hexham
My name is Elaine and as I've always been interested in people and their stories, I was drawn to training and working as a therapist. I trained as a relationship counsellor with Relate and started working with couples and individuals in 2010. I then trained for a further 3+ years, drawn to Gestalt Psychotherapy because of its holistic approach. My training required me to work with individuals so I worked at Mind in Gateshead from 2014–16.
I now work with both with couples and individuals.
When working with couples I like to understand each individual as well as the issues and the couple relationship. My intention is to create a balanced space for both voices to be heard. As we engage with your issues and experiences, my aim is to open up dialogue and create a safe space from where it's possible to learn, increase understanding and communication and find some clarity.
With clarity, so much more is possible.
With individuals, my aim is similar – to create a space for you to be heard and look at what is distressing you. Using our therapeutic relationship and your resources, I will be alongside you as, at your own pace and in a safe space, you can gain a better understanding of the issues and increase clarity about what's happening for you.
From time to time, I like to invite clients to review how our therapeutic relationship and your experience of our sessions is working for you.
Gestalt Therapy is a compassionate way of learning to get to know yourself, your thoughts and your feelings, which may, right now, feel complicated, contradictory, muddled, uncomfortable and possibly overwhelming.
Training, qualifications & experience
I started my training in the Republic of Ireland with an Introductory Course in Social and Health Education, then completed a Certificate in Social Sciences with the Open University and in 2002 achieved a Certificate in Applied Social Studies at the Cork Institute of Technology. In 2008 I successfully completed Year 1 of the IACP accredited Diploma in Counselling (integrative) which, as I moved to the UK, I didn't complete.
In 2010 I started training with Relate as a couples counsellor and successfully completed my University Advanced Diploma: Introduction to Couple Counselling. I worked with Relate in Newcastle from 2010–2014.
I trained for a further 3+ years at the Edinburgh Gestalt Institute – beginning with an intensive Fundamentals Course, followed by the Gestalt Therapy Training course (566 hours) which ended in 2015 and I completed in 2016. I worked with Mind in Gateshead from 2014–16.
2016 Gestalt Therapy Training Course Award – Edinburgh Gestalt Institute
2016 Certificate of Training (three years of GPTI Accredited Training) – Gestalt Psychotherapy & Training Institute.
In 2017 I completed my Certificate of Proficiency with BACP and am now a Registered Member. I also attended a Gestalt Couples Counselling Training Course at the Gestalt Centre in London, linking Gestalt therapy with couples therapy.
I have attended numerous CPD's to keep me up to date and to expand my knowledge and will continue to do so.
Since leaving Mind I have been working in Private Practice and am now basing myself in both Allendale, Northumberland and Chester-le-Street, Co. Durham.
