About me

Going through a difficult, painful or stressful time often feels very lonely and overwhelming. Talking to someone who is not involved can be really helpful at a time like this; someone who is a skilled listener, who is empathic, warm and respectful and who does not judge or have an agenda. This can free us up to express our thoughts and feelings, see our situation more clearly, discover things about ourselves and what solutions work for us.

I am a very experienced counsellor working with Accord Counselling Cardiff, a small team of private practitioners based in Canton, Cardiff. As your counsellor I will be committed to working with you in an emotionally supportive and confidential way and through empathic listening and helpful questions, will provide you with thinking space. Space for you to gain a deeper understanding of what is going on for you and the opportunity to stand back and see a way forward. If you are going through a challenging time, I want to help.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified counsellor (Diploma in Counselling) with over 25 years' experience in specialist alcohol and drug counselling and generic counselling. Throughout my career I have been able to work with very many people with a wide range of issues from alcohol and drug use to anxiety and depression, bereavement, childhood abuse, low self-esteem and post traumatic stress.

I believe that people are the experts in their own lives, that each person is unique and will have their own solutions to the problems they face. My work is rooted in a humanistic, person-centred philosophy, draws on elements of cognitive behavioural therapy, solution focussed approach and is greatly informed by the values and skills of Motivational interviewing; a strengths-based, respectful intervention style aimed at helping people to make positive changes in their lives. This integrated approach allows me to respond to each person's particular situation and needs in a flexible and useful way.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
