All Saints Road
I am a Play and Creative Arts Therapist accredited by Play Therapy UK (PTUK), working with children and teenagers who have emotional or behavioural difficulties. My therapy is child-led, and uses the media of imaginative play, drawing, painting, sand, clay, and puppets to help children express themselves in ways which are often not possible using words.
In the past I have worked as a speech and language therapist, and my involvement with children struggling with a language, communication or learning difficulty has given me a particular interest in addressing the significant emotional issues which are often associated with such problems. As the mother of four boys I understand from personal experience many of the dilemmas facing parents, children, and adolescents and I work closely with parents, where appropriate, in supporting them.
Play and creative arts therapy is useful for helping with low self-esteem, anxiety, bereavement, family breakdown, depression, attachment problems, bullying, making and keeping friendships, anger and aggression, and also difficulties related to ADHD or Autism Spectrum Disorders. As this is a non-directive approach, everything happens at the person's own pace and according to their interests and abilities.
I am based in Newmarket, and I cover Cambridge and the areas around it as well as parts of Suffolk.
Training, qualifications & experience
My background is in speech and language therapy. Following a career break to have my children, I returned for 10 years, then decided to train as a counsellor, beginning with PTUK's Certificate in Skills and Theory for Counselling Young People in 2007 and completing the Postgraduate Diploma in Play Therapy in 2011. I have recently completed a post qualifying course in Creative Arts Therapy, which enables me to work creatively with adults as well as children and young people. I am in the process of training as a clinical supervisor for PTUK.
