About me

I am a psychodynamic psychotherapist with a quiet and comfortable consulting room in Brentwood, Essex, within walking distance of both Brentwood station and the High Street. Alongside my private practice, I also work as a group therapist within a university.

I have considerable experience with people whose difficulties are around relationships, whether in the past or currently; with people who struggle with anger or aggression; or who have experienced turbulent or chaotic personal lives, whether through traumatic experiences, complex family lives or otherwise.

I have a particular interest in people who experience themselves as outsiders, or people whose struggles relate to cultural or societal norms, rules or expectations.

About therapy

Psychotherapy is an exploratory process and many concerns can be fruitfully brought to it. It is particularly helpful for those who would like to understand more about their emotions and behavioural patterns. It is most often beneficial as a relatively long-term process, although I do offer short-term work if suitable.

As well as helping to relieve emotional difficulties or destructive behavioural patterns, therapy can help to make sense of such experiences. It can help achieve deep and long-lasting changes and is often as much about discovering your strengths and capacity for enjoyment, as it is about coming to terms with difficulty.

What is psychodynamic psychotherapy?

As a psychodynamic psychotherapist, I work with the idea that our early experiences affect us in our adult lives, and that we are likely to repeat these experiences in later relationships. Often these patterns come to light within the therapy itself, giving an opportunity to understand them better – perhaps their cause, why they seem so persistent and how we might be able to do things differently. This process helps make sense of aspects of life which may have felt overwhelming, confusing or disconnected, and discover a deeper and more robust sense of ourselves.

Arranging an Appointment

If you'd like to get in touch, please do so by phone or by email and we can arrange to meet for an initial consultation. This meeting would be an opportunity for you to put into words what has prompted you get in touch, explore any questions you have and for us to see if we can work together.

Should we decide to continue, sessions would be at the same time(s) each week and last for fifty minutes. The regularity and consistency of sessions is helpful in providing a stable setting to explore deeper-lying issues.

You are welcome to contact me on 07581 251192, or via info@nickjonestherapy.com. If I am unavailable when you call, please do leave a message and I will get back to you. Any communication will be treated in confidence and I reply promptly to all messages.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained as a psychodynamic psychotherapist at WPF Therapy and am a registered member of both the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP), and the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).

WPF Therapy has a reputation as one of the UK's leading psychotherapy organisations, and UKCP registration requires therapists to have achieved a high standard of training and experience. It also requires therapists to work in accordance with the UKCP's Ethical Framework, ensuring their practice is ethically sound.

As well as working with people individually, I have conducted psychotherapy groups for the past eight years, within both the NHS and Higher Education. I am an associate member of both the Institute of Group Analysis, and the Group Analytic Society International. At some point in 2024, I hope to convene a private psychotherapy group in Brentwood - do ask if you feel group psychotherapy could be helpful for you.

I have worked with people from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds, giving me considerable experience and understanding of the difficulties people can encounter around their emotions, behaviour, relationships and identity. I have particular experience working in forensic services and within the criminal justice system, as well as people who experience themselves as outsiders - whether in relation their family, culture, or other facets of identity.

I have written and delivered training programmes for non-therapists, and have a particular interest in psychotherapy's relevance to everyday life, believing it to be a helpful process for people across social and cultural spectrums.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
