I have worked as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist for nearly 20 years. I initially trained in Person Centred Counselling but then proceeded to train as a Psychodrama Psychotherapist. I have worked in a range of settings including GP surgery, University student services and a hospice before setting up my private practice in 2003.
In my work with clients I focus on being with you where you are, exploring the issues that have brought you into counselling and how you might move through them towards a more resourced and fulfilling way of living. I offer a supportive and safe environment in which to work – I find clients need to be accepted where they are but also need to be gently challenged so they can begin to break the patterns that they have lived with, often for many years.
In recent years I have become more interested in working in the outdoors with those clients who are interested in their connection with the natural world. All the traditional boundaries for effective and safe counselling/psychotherapy still apply, including a mutually agreed focus for our work and agreements regarding confidentiality. I find that, when I'm in the outdoors with clients, I feel more connected to a larger sense of myself and more at peace in the world with the result that I am more fully present in the work we do together.
I also offer coaching specifically for clients who, on the surface, feel they have all they could ask for in life - a good job, financially secure, loving family, comfortable home and they don't have a need to explore developmental issues which impact their current lives - yet they feel empty inside, as though something intrinsic were missing in their lives. They may feel they lack direction or a sense of purpose in life often wondering what life is about. This coaching work normally takes place in the outdoors where we have an opportunity to connect more fully with the natural world. Sessions can last an hour as with psychotherapy or some people benefit more from longer sessions, sometimes spending a whole day together exploring these issues.
