About me

Dr Michael Sims is a Psychotherapist, and a Lecturer/Coordinator at Southampton City College on the BA (Hons) in Person-Centred Counselling & Psychotherapy, and Senior Lecturer/Award Leader on the MA in Counselling & Psychotherapy at Bath Spa University. Mike has had many years experience working with people from all walks of life. Mike trained in an approach developed back in the 1950's by the Humanistic Psychologist Carl Rogers, known as Person-Centred Therapy.

Mike offers a relational therapy based in a genuine, understanding and accepting climate, striving and respecting clients in their entirety. He believes it is through this relationship that clients can find the resources and answers to their issues and troubles. This in turn can potentially build confidence and a sense of empowerment within the client leading to greater feelings of self-worth.

Mike is an Accredited registered member of the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy MBACP (Accred), adhering to their ethical framework to ensure professional conduct and equality, which Mike believes assists in creating confidence and assurance in the relationship.

For self-healing to occur in clients, the relationship between the therapist and the client is the key - and it is this key - that can help unlock the client's potential for positive growth.

Mike offers therapy in a traditional setting 1:1 in his office or if you’d like something different, he also offers walk and talk therapy.

Walk and Talk Therapy
So, what is it? Very simply it’s therapy whilst going for walk. The therapist and client will walk and talk together in a chosen designated spot outdoors, developing a therapeutic relationship to assist therapeutic change in the client, whilst experiencing this in ‘green spaces’, for example the countryside.

Individual Counselling

Mike strives to create a therapeutic relationship which can foster positive growth and self-healing in the client. Many clients come with many differing issues and problems ranging from work related stress, trauma, divorce, bereavement, loss, depression to diagnosed mental illness like bipolar and borderline personality disorder. Mike has experience working with client's from all walks of life who present a varied multitude of problems and issues ranging from the ones previousy mentioned.

Relationship / Couples Counselling

Mike also offers relationship counselling for couples or families. Sometimes it can difficult to communicate to our loved ones, partners and family members, This could be due to crisis, divorce or separation, loss of trust, family issues or infidelity, which can result in conflict and pain. If we are experiencing our own distress or anger it is difficult to hear others and this is where counselling can be of help. Relationship counselling is for everyone who needs that extra bit of support, including married couples, parents and children, same sex couples, step-families, siblings and anyone who is experiencing issues/problems in a relationship.

Mike's commitment to clients

Mike continually strives for ethical practice and through this he is committed to enhancing the service he is able to offer clients. This is achieved through Mike's continuing professional development, whereby he undertakes additional training, attends relevant workshops, and is an active member within the counselling and psychotherapy world.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
