"What we achieve inwardly will change outer reality." Plutarch
Hello. My approach is compassionate and relational: here I describe a little more so that you can consider whether I might be the right therapist for you. If you have any further questions, I welcome enquiries.
Though my core training is in transactional analysis, I use a range of approaches in a fluid, integrated way in order to hone in on what works best for each of my clients. My warm and empathic style enables clients to work with their difficulties in a gentle and effective way, shedding new light on deep issues and allowing life changes to occur.
How therapy can help you
Whether you want to understand what is happening in your life or relationship, make the changes you long for or make sense of a loss or difficulty, exploring using a gentle psychotherapeutic approach is a positive step forward.
Location & unique therapy space
I work from a beautiful, round therapy room at healing space, located on the Northumberland coast close to the historic market town of Alnwick and within walking distance of the Alnmouth for Alnwick railway station. Here I provide a safe, confidential space for you to explore, understand and overcome your problems. Parking is available.
Talking therapy or sandtray & creative exploration
You will find therapy tailored to your needs: whether you are an adolescent, an older person or a couple you will be listened to with careful attunement and respect; there is opportunity to explore using creative media, like sandtray therapy, or to simply talk.
Weekly or fortnightly therapy
I maintain a small case-load in order to give each client valued attention, and can offer both weekly or fortnightly therapy from 6 weeks to much longer term, depending on your needs. Each session is 50 minutes or you may prefer double sessions spaced further apart. Following an initial session, we look together at what may suit you.
"Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing there is a field...I'll meet you there." Rumi
I wish you greater self-awareness, freedom and well-being in your journey towards your goals.
Training, qualifications & experience
Training & Qualifications
I trained at the Northern Guild in Jesmond, Newcastle in integrative psychotherapy with a core model of transactional analysis. I hold a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and Diplomas in Psychotherapy in child & adolescent work and in work with adults, both at distinction level. In 2016 I completed Masters research into the client experience of attunement within psychotherapy gaining a distinction: focusing on the client's experience of being heard, seen and understood remains central to my practice.
I have undertaken further training in working with couples and in supervision and enjoy working as a couples therapist, a supervisor and trainer alongside my work with individuals and groups. I have undertaken training courses in sandtray therapy as well as working with dreams and working with imagery & metaphor: creative ways of working are open to my clients who wish to work in these ways although it is also fine to simply talk.
Prior to training as a therapist, I worked for ten years with children and young people in crisis or transition and have used my training and experience to advise within fostering and education.
My first degree is in English with creative writing. Creative approaches to problem solving - finding new ways to work with old problems - are some of the most enjoyable aspects of facilitating life changes with my clients.

Following your enquiry
Once I receive your email enquiry via the counselling directory, I will reply to you by email to arrange a time to speak by telephone in order to answer any questions you may have and book an appointment for you. If you prefer to simply arrange an appointment via email that is also possible.
What to expect in your first session
A single parking space is available for you on the driveway outside healing space where I will greet you at the appointment time and show you to the therapy room. The first session is for you to ask any questions you may have and for me to understand a little more about what is troubling you and what you are experiencing currently. I will also ask you what you would like to be different. I will use some simple questions to help me to get to know you and to gain insight into your problem; we will discuss together how you might feel comfortable working with that going forward. It is ok if you are not sure what is happening for you, or if you feel confused about how that has come about - therapy is a gentle process of making sense of things and it is not unusual for some uncertainty and confusion to be present when clients first begin. I am here to help you with that. Clients often feel worried or anxious beginning therapy - that is normal and nothing to be afraid of. You are taking a positive step forward making changes in your life and that can sometimes feel daunting. Be assured that we will go at your pace and that I will listen with respect to you.
Fees, confidentiality and appointments will be clarified in our first meeting and agreed in discussion together.
