About me

Since 1999, I have been practising as a relationship and personal development counsellor. My overall aim is to improve the quality of people’s lives and relationships.I work both with couples and individuals.

My work covers such issues as better communications, sex and intimacy, improving self esteem through learning how to self nurture, overcoming any tendencies to violence, coming to terms with personal loss and bereavement, coping with mental or physical illness, building a better future.Recently I have been doing quite a lot of work with individual men.

I am a Relate Licensed Counsellor, hold the Relate Certificate in Couple Counselling, and am a Member, BACP.

I also offer some voluntary counselling to Share Psychotherapy, which gives therapy to people with longer term psychological difficulties.

I have explored several personal development paths myself including existentialism and native American teachings.

Background: Born in 1947, I worked as a manager in the Civil Service until 1998, including work in human resources.Wishing to bring out the best in myself and to enable others to do likewise provided the motivation to become a counsellor.

On other aspects of life, since 1990 I have sought to improve access to the outdoor environment for people with different disabilities, and to this end I am a trustee for a small organisation called the Sensory Trust.

I have also been a professional musician since 1980, playing tenor saxophone and bassoon, and working largely in the field of experimental improvisation.I am nationally known in this field.

When I left the Civil Service I decided to train as a counsellor.I joined Relate, and I have been working as a counsellor for them since 1999, first in Relate offices, and then when those offices closed in Sheffield, as a Practitioner working under Relate Licence, usually from my home.

Training, qualifications & experience

I joined Relate in 1999, obtained the Relate Certificate of Marital and Couple Counselling in 2002, and have worked from home as a Relate Licensed Counsellor since 2003.Since 2008 I have also been working as a therapist at Share Psychotherapy, an independent organization in Sheffield which works with people who have longer term mental health needs, e.g. those arising from histories of abuse or trauma. Most of the Share clients are referred by local GPs.

My approach is primarily psychodynamic, but with elements of integrative, mindfulness, and solution focus.I have undertaken a range of continuous professional development courses to keep myself up to date with evolving beliefs and methods for delivering effective counselling/therapy.

My self development has also included 2 years in a Gestalt group, and a number of years on native American teachings.I am also a co-counsellor (a discipline of offering free reciprocal support to other co-counsellors by mutual arrangement.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
