About me

My name is Michael Thorpe and I am a professionally trained counsellor dealing with many fields including, but not only, addictive and dependent behaviours, perception altering drugs including cannabis, anxiety driven behaviour, and relational issues, domestic and sexual abuse.

My strength is that I care about my clients, I understand the significance of the counselling relationship and I am competent in what I do having worked as a counsellor and an addiction therapist for 35 years.

To decide to work with a counsellor/therapist you need to be assured of a few important matters, how good are they and how long will the process take? If you engage with me in the counselling relationship I will provide you with a safe and supportive environment in which you can work through whatever you need to. How long the process takes is driven by you, I am committed to work at your pace for as long as you need, equally you are free to terminate at any time with no explanation.

Counselling can be a life changing experience, releasing you and enabling you to have the future that you are hoping for. I would be my privilege to help you achieve this.

Training, qualifications & experience

I qualified at Canterbury University in Addiction Management achieving an Honours Degree. I also trained in Person Centred Counselling, Psycho-dynamic Counselling, Systemic Counselling (CBT, MTI), Dual Diagnosis and Counselling Supervision.

I have been recognised with an award from HM Queen Elizabeth for my contribution to addiction services. I delivered the first CBT programme for female offenders in the UK which received the Butler Trust award for innovation and success. I developed education counselling support groups for partners and parents, and spoke on radio and television on issues of addiction and relational issues.

I have worked for thirty five years in the addiction field for statutory, voluntary and charitable organisations. I worked for the NHS in the A&E department providing patients with advise and brief interventions concerning their alcohol use and available treatments. I have worked for the probation service. Currently I work counselling, providing supervision for other counsellors, and contracts with treatment services, acute mental health services and the local council.

Previously Senior Associate Member of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
