Michael Leckey MBACP
I am a qualified and experienced BACP registered counsellor offering confidential individual one to one support for adults, listening without judgement or pressure.
I work from a Gestalt approach and my main aim is to work collaboratively with you to bring a greater awareness as to how you experience and exist in your world, to understand your patterns of relating both in how your view yourself and the impact on your relationships, also how these patterns were formed and how they are maintained. Very often our beliefs of how we see ourselves and how we relate to others can create or maintain anxiety, depression, panic, anger or stress, or low self confidence or self esteem, and also how we are affected by traumatic circumstances or experiences both in childhood or later in life.
The therapy I offer is aimed to provide you with an opportunity to explore and understand personal and relational issues, to see more clearly what your situation is, how you are part of it, and also to have autonomy, contentment and self-direction in your own life. I believe that when we can have an awareness of how we exist in our world it affords us the ability of choice and when we have an informed choice of how we exist we can become the author of own own life and to live our life with freedom and authenticity. I believe that you have the resources, strength and ability to have rewarding relationships with others and to live your life in a satisfying, self-accepting and meaningful way.
To bring a greater awareness as to how you relate to others the way I work is to include experiential tasks between sessions, the purpose being to focus your attention on how you exist relationally with other people or in situations. We may also include communication skills (which includes listening skills, conflict resolution skills, assertion skills and collaboration skills) into our work together.
When a person may think about whether to seek counselling, it may be as a relief from distress from pain or anxiety, or difficulties arising in relationships with others, or from sensing that there is more to life and that there are missing possibilities as to what life has to offer. Counselling can offer an opportunity for self exploration as to who you are as a person, an understanding of your behaviours, beliefs and experiences, and also an investment into your own well-being and happiness.
I offer counselling in two areas; home visits and in the outdoors. For outdoors counselling we can have a walking and talking therapy in the natural environment or if you prefer home visits i can come to where you feel most comfortable, it is still counselling but in your own home. All i require is a quiet place free from distraction to focus on your concerns or issues you would like to talk about.
