Michael Leckey MBACP
I am a qualified and experienced BACP registered counsellor offering confidential individual one to one support for adults, listening without judgement or pressure. I work from a Gestalt approach and my main aim is to work collaboratively to bring a greater awareness as to how you experience and exist in your world, and to provide you with an opportunity to explore and understand personal and relational issues, to see more clearly what your situation is, how you are part of it, and also to have autonomy and self-direction in your own life.
I believe that people are born with the resources and ability to have rewarding relationships with other people and to live their life with authenticity, however during childhood, personal circumstances later in life or after experiencing traumatic events a person can adjust to those circumstances, causing problems in relationships and also affecting how they see themselves as a person. I work in a warm, personal and individual way to assist a person in gaining this awareness, and also may suggest experiential tasks between sessions, the purpose being to focus your attention on how you exist relationally with other people or situations.
I work from home in a converted bedroom used now as a small counselling room and also offer outdoor counselling for people who feel they may benefit for either walking and talking, or finding a quiet spot somewhere free from distraction.
Counselling for me is about finding a way to live in a satisfying and meaningful way, to understand and gain an awareness of who you are as a person and to provide an understanding of your experiences and beliefs. I don't particularly take the view that I am “helping” you, as I see it, it's actually you who is trying to help yourself, and by seeking counselling you are trying to overcome or understand what it is that is affecting you, and perhaps to gain a better awareness of yourself, or maybe even to discover yourself as a person. My role is not to help, but to assist you along this path.
