About me

INDIVIDUAL, COUPLE, FAMILY, PSYCHOTHERAPY SERVICES, SW and Nth London

About Me:

I am a qualified Individual, Couple, Family Psychotherapist, UKCP and CRB Reg.ed with a background history of over 25 years experience in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) and Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) as a Clinician and Head of Profession.

As Head of Profession I developed and managed the largest Family Therapy Service nationally within Central and Outer London Boroughs. In recognition of this achievement I am a national figure within my profession and held and hold Trustee Director positions in charities, such as Young Minds, and have the ongoing position as Chair of the National Professional Standards Committee.

Brief Resume of what I offer:

I provide psychotherapeutic services within the Private Sector for individuals, couples and families across the life cycle. I have substantial training and experience of systemic/relational, psycho-dynamic, cognitive and behavioural therapeutic interventions for a range of emotional, psychological, relationship difficulties to fit different presentations, including providing risk assessments and management.

In relation to couple therapy (see details below) where there is an impasse I have legal experience including that of expert witness related to conflict over residency, access arrangements and placing children for adoption.

I have a room just off Kings Road, near Sloane Square tube station and home visits can be negotiated.

First Contact:

Telephone to discuss the presenting difficulty and potential fit with what I can provide and negotiate availability (See Availability Section above).

First Session:

Essentially this is the initial assessment. Ideally if the difficulty is about family relationship and/or partnership difficulties, it is helpful if all concerned parties attend the first meeting. At the beginning rules of therapy are given ie confidentiality and all parties that attend are given the opportunity to speak and be heard. This meeting is likely to be longer than follow up sessions and 90 minutes duration. At the end of the session a tentative understanding will be offered with a plan for future sessions or a further assessment will be recommended. Follow up sessions are usually 55/60 minutes duration. Sometimes one session can be helpful, there is no hard and fast rule of how many follow up sessions are recommended for the best outcome or how often is dependent upon so many factors.

Family/Parenting Therapy:

I have experience of families , including fostering and adoption, of varying form, from many backgrounds and cultures. Style and intervention is matched to each family's needs. Problems can arise at any time, but often related to life cycle and developmental events : marriage/partnership, pregnancy, birth, sibling rivalry, infancy, adolescence, 'leaving home', and young, mid-life, and older adulthood, death and bereavement. Life-cycle events can be unpredictable: mixed ethnic and cultural partnerships, partnership and parents' separation, divorce, redundancy, financial difficulties, addiction, gambling, mental disorders (including eating disorders, depression, obsessional compulsive disorder, anxiety, suicide attempts actual suicide)and physical illness, migration, accidents, disability, illness, premature death. All these events can upset family equilibrium and that require individual and personal, emotional, behaviour and relational adaptation. Therapy provides a safe space to explore and understand each member's thoughts, feelings, values and dilemmas and minimise conflict, promote increased empathy and aim for resolution.

Couple Reconciliation Therapy:

Reconciliation therapy essentially is for those couples who want to stay together. Couple relationships are impacted upon many of the concerns cited above. It aims to (1) Facilitate communication (2) Increase awareness of each partner's thoughts, feels and values (3) decrease/increase management of criticism, and conflict (4) increase empathy and intimacy (5) create new positive patterns of interaction

Couple Conciliation Therapy:

Conciliation therapy is for those who have decide to separate, or have already separated. It aims (1) for a constructive resolution without recourse to legal intervention (2) to facilitate negotiation help couples to identify simultaneous painful emotional processes (distrust, hostility, jealousy, disappointment, grief) and lessen impact upon necessary rational processes with detrimental consequences, particularly upon children (3) to promote children's best interests (4) facilitate agreements about residency and access arrangements for children.

Court Resolution:

Sometimes it is just not possible achieve a constructive outcome and to manage the impasse it is necessary to use the legal system. I have experience in providing assessments, reports and recommendations for the court, including that of Expert Witness and cross examination.
