About me

I can help you free yourself from your emotional and relationship struggles by supporting you to understand and strengthen your own sense of self.

Qualified and experienced in counselling, psychotherapy and coaching, I have over 30 years of experience of helping people grow and develop.

What we want from life is closely related to how we feel about ourselves. Understanding how we are - how we respond to what life throws at us - often requires deep exploration. After many years in organisational and leadership development, I trained in counselling/psychotherapy, and have continued to learn, study and experience. This has included person-centred, psychodynamic, transactional analysis, and existential approaches.

Whatever is troubling you - anxiety, stress, depression, relationships, work - you probably want to talk about it.  Where friends and family might offer sympathy and advice, I can offer a more therapeutic approach.  Through non-judgemental exploration of your life experience, we can work together to change how you feel, how you respond, and how you are.

My comfortable, quiet counselling room in Craiglockhart is just a short drive or bus ride from town.  It's easy to reach, and easy to settle into.  Do come.

Training, qualifications & experience

My qualifications include a Masters in Counselling & Psychotherapy from the University of Stirling, a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling from the University of Edinburgh, and an Advanced Certificate in Coaching & Mentoring from CIPD/OSCM.

I am committed to continuous professional development and participated in 36 hours of CPD over the last year. This included sessions on the Transference-Countertransference Relationship, Embodied Mindfulness, and PTSD from an Attachment Perspective, Working with Drugs & Alcohol, and Understanding Anger.

I have been an independent development facilitator and coach for over 20 years, working with individuals and teams in commercial, public and non-profit organisations.

I also have an MBA from the University of Edinburgh and a BSc in Materials Science from the University of Sussex.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Supervision

In person

Supervision offers an opportunity for us to be curious about our own practice, to contract with a supportive practitioner to explore the thoughts, feelings and ethics of our work in a confidential and theoretically congruent space.
