Matt Fox - Psychosynthesis Counsellor
The Nautilus Rooms
35a Fore Street
Hello. If you're here, I imagine you've got to a place where you wish life were easier. Or less painful. Or just different. And you want that to change. Maybe you want to feel more alive.
I know that taking a step to go to counselling can feel scary. I remember that feeling, being anxious about talking to someone unfamiliar about what I was finding difficult. Wondering if they could make a difference.
I also remember how counselling helped me through my own difficult times. I don't know yet if I can help you. But I hope this page might help you decide.
And if I'm not the right counsellor for you, I'll help you find someone who is.
What can I help with?
I can help if you are an adult woman or man who is struggling with something difficult in your life.
It might be:
- Anxiety and panic attacks
- Ongoing depression that won’t shift
- Relationship issues including difficulties with partners, children or parents and not being able to find a relationship or sustain one
- Stress at work or home
- Anger – either too much or not enough
- Loss and grief, including bereavement
- Or it might be something different which it’s too hard to share with a loved one or friend.
You’ll see a fuller list of concerns I work with at the bottom of this page.
How can I help you?
I’m here to help you find a more peaceful place in yourself, more joy and more connection with yourself and with others. I’ll help you get there by:
- Providing a warm, non threatening and confidential space for you to share what’s going on
- Listening without judgement
- Helping you see the patterns that hold you back
- Exploring your fears and worries safely so they feel less daunting
- Supporting you to connect with what you really long for
- Helping you to identify your choices and the steps you need to take
I work short term (between 6 and 12 sessions) and longer term with adults of all ages.
I’m a post graduate qualified counsellor. So you can be confident I’ve studied in depth and to some of the highest standards for counselling.
I work as a Psychosynthesis counsellor.
This approach is a soulful and gentle way of working through what is painful and is guided by a belief that you can be all you can be.
It combines well-established counselling techniques (including person-centred, psychodynamic, Gestalt and transpersonal methods) to provide an approach which is unique to your needs.
I also incorporate mindfulness and creativity into the way I work, if that feels right for you.

Want to get started?
When you contact me, I will always try to respond within a day. I'll offer a free 15 minute phone consultation to hear what you're looking for and to get a sense of whether it's something I can help with.
If we agree you'd like to take things forward, I'll aim to meet you for a 50 minute initial meeting within a week.
At this first session we will explore what is going on for you and how counselling might be able to help. If we agree that working together is the right thing for you, we'll confirm when we will meet and whether a limited number of sessions is appropriate or to work in a more open-ended way.
Nature based counselling
You may feel this instinctively, but being outdoors in nature has been shown to be a powerful help for wellbeing. It can also relieve anxiety and help with depression.
I'm one of few counsellors in the UK to be trained in depth to offer nature-based therapy sessions outdoors (also known as ecotherapy.) I offer sessions in nearby nature in the South Hams area.
If working outdoors is something you'd be interested in, please get in touch for an initial chat by either emailing through this site or calling me on 07443 640556

Training, qualifications & experience
I’m a professional counsellor with a post graduate level qualification. I am registered with the BACP, whose ethical guidelines I adhere to and am fully insured.
I initially trained as a Psychosynthesis counsellor at the Psychosynthesis and Education Trust, the UK's oldest and foremost centre for Psychosynthesis. I came to counselling having experienced the transformational potential of this approach to counselling in my own life.
I have a passion for nature and how it can impact each of us.
I have trained in depth to work as a counsellor outdoors (also known as an ecotherapy), with the leading practitioners in the UK, Martin Jordan and Hayley Marshall. I work with clients in natural settings.
I regularly write articles on counselling, its benefits and how it changes lives:
I volunteered with a Carers charity and have extensive experience of working with carers.
I've a broad range of life experiences including living and working abroad, working the public and private sector, setting up and running a business and managing people. I've worked as a coach and mentor in professional settings.
I continue to update my skills and experience with ongoing training.
