About me

I am a qualified BACP Registered Counsellor providing short-term solution focus therapy and long term counselling to individuals and groups. I am based in South-West London. I have accumulated 17 years of experience working with a wide range of issues including lack of interest/motivation, cultural conflicts, depression, loss, bereavement, anxiety, stress, addictions, sexuality, HIV and AIDS and relationship difficulties. I have worked in different settings as a Sexual Health Counsellor, a Group Facilitator and as a Senior Practitioner in residential settings in charitable foundations.

I draw upon a variety of theoretical approaches tailored to the client's needs as well as employing approaches such as motivational interview techniques, gestalt, cognitive behavioural therapy, existential, personal centred therapy, and solution focus therapy.

My approach always considers the influences of the past and how they have affected the individual's life experiences. I have worked extensively with clients with addictive issues and I apply existential and cognitive behavioural approaches to enable my clients to obtain positive results and outcomes. The decision to embark on a therapeutic experience may cause one to experience a sense of distress, confusion, anxiety or feeling overwhelmed. However, in my practice I create a safe and warm environment where I offer opportunities to confidentially explore these emotional and psychological feelings. My aim is to enable the client to reflect, clarify and work towards living in a more harmonious and resourceful way.

If you wish to access further information please feel free to contact me for a confidential discussion or to book an initial session.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have been working under different roles providing therapeutic support for 17 years. My 3 years professional training was undertaken at the CSCT Central School of Counselling and Therapy in London where I gained a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (Humanistic) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Cultural Diversity in Therapy and Counselling at Goldsmiths University of London.

Experiences:
ADDICTION
I have considerable experience in supporting clients with addictive behaviour i.e. substance misuse, alcohol dependency, sex addiction or compulsive tendencies and consequences of these in their lives.

There are different ways of viewing and working with addictive behaviour and I consider the behaviour as a learned maladaptive survival mechanism rather than viewing it as a scientific disease.

They are all different and unique in themselves and I am able to adapt my method and approach with each client.

SEX AND SEXUALITY
Sex and sexuality is an intrinsic aspect of our identity and to deny its full expression may cause an inner struggle in an individual. An internal conflict may arise when one suppresses true feelings in order to avoid having our identity stigmatized. I have worked with the above issues and the impacts it has had on the clients for several years and have gained the ability to manage the tension that these issues may cause. This has provided the client with the opportunity to explore, in detailed ways to successfully manage, process, accept and integrate any change desired.

Further information

At times of distress or facing a challenging situation it may be difficult to come to terms with the idea that perhaps talking to a therapist would be the best option in finding a way forward in life. The task can be daunting especially if it's the first time one has considered to seek therapy. I advise my clients to take the first step by considering a meeting to discuss if talking therapy is the correct approach for them. There is extensive research that confirms that it is the quality of the relationship that make the experience useful rather than the experience or theoretical approach of the therapist.

I believe people are able to move towards their desired goal as long as they are willing to be involved in the process and take responsibility for the choices they wish to make. I provide a space that allows the client to have time to get in touch with his or her own resources and importantly decide if they wish to work with me. Through this dialogue clients will then be able to decide what they wish to explore and resolve and the duration of the therapy. As Carl Rogers says: Freedom to be oneself is a frighteningly responsible freedom, and an individual moves towards it cautiously, fearfully, and with almost no confidence at first.
