Dr Masrita Ishaq CPsychol
What I can help with
I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist (HCPC registered and BPS accredited). I have worked in a range of NHS and third sector settings with individuals and groups. I am experienced in helping people explore and manage a range of issues including:
- Anxiety, Worry, Panic Attacks, Social Anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
- Overwhelming Feelings
- Low mood and Depression
- Complex Trauma
- Sexual Trauma
- Cultural and Adaptation Issues
How I work and how psychological therapy can help
Central to my work is the relationship between the therapist and the client, and the development of a confidential, contained and safe space to explore difficult experiences. I work integratively drawing from my background in providing Humanistic, Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioural, Mindfulness, Cognitive Analytic and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. Particularly I am interested in how our experiences shape the way we deal with and manage things. For some people, exploring this allows for insight, that is sufficient to help them make positive changes in their lives. For others, robust behavioural changes need to be negotiated between themselves and their environment (such as with their family, work and friends). At times, I also request my clients to fill in diary sheets to gain a good shared understanding of how their issues affect their daily life.
My background and experience
I have worked with people at difference stages in their lives- such as students studying in further education, individuals who have experienced loss and bereavement, to individuals presenting with complex physical and mental health difficulties who need 24-hour support.
I currently work in an inpatient rehabilitation setting for individuals with mental health problems such as psychotic breakdown, suicidal attempts and those with a forensic history. I have also facilitated reflective practice groups and offered clinical supervision for staff members in organisational settings.
I specialise in helping people with sexual trauma and anxiety related issues. I am currently a psychotherapist with the Rape and Sexual Abuse Support Centre (RASASC) in Guildford.
What to expect from the initial session
I offer short and longer term therapy options. After an initial assessment session/period to gain a good understanding of individuals' needs, I discuss therapeutic routes with my clients. The initial session usually gives people a good gauge of whether therapy is something that they would like to embark on. I usually recommend six sessions and a review towards the end, with the option to continue if we both feel that it is appropriate.
I also offer specific form of therapy:
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)- 8 sessions
The goal of ACT is to live a rich and meaningful life while accepting that painful experiences go hand in hand with that. Through the practice of mindfulness and cognitive de-fusion, you will learn to accept painful thoughts and feelings, while clarifying and committing towards a life that is underpinned by values meaningful to you. ACT is an active form of therapy and would require completion of tasks in between sessions.
Therapy that fits your needs
Brief time-limited therapy are normally focused on a specific issue. Whereas longer term therapy offers the opportunity to work with deeper issues and usually lead to a natural ending. For the latter, regular reviews are done every 2-3 sessions to ensure that clients are still finding therapy beneficial.
