About me

I am an experienced counsellor, EMDR practitioner and welfare consultant working in the centre of Gloucester. I specialise in working with clients who have been involved in traumatic events or my have experienced issues in the workplace such as bullying.

My counselling model is integrative predominately CBT, working with the client to find the most appropriate therapeutic intervention.

During the last 25years I have worked primarily as a counsellor within the Police Service gaining considerable experience in working with trauma and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) this includes trauma support and organisational responses to major incidents.

Counselling
I will provide a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment in which you can talk openly and confidentially about what might be troubling you. Counselling sessions usually last for one hour and appointments can be made at varying times and days. Counselling usually requires a minimum of six weeks in order to create a therapeutic relationship that makes positive changes.

CBT
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy can help you to change the way you think, feel and behave. Focusing on what is happening now, breaking the problems down into smaller parts and looking for ways to improve your state of mind.

EMDR
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing a complex and powerful therapy developed by Dr Francine Shapiro in the 1980 is the treatment recommend by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) in treating PTSD. There has been considerable research into the benefits of EMDR in working with trauma arising from, war related experiences, childhood sexual or physical abuse, natural disasters, assaults, road traffic collisions and workplace accidents.

Trauma Support
Working with individuals to manage traumatic stress, deal with intrusive images, improve sleep, reduce anxiety and panic attacks, confront fears and get back to normal activities. Trauma Support is not therapy it is Psycho-Education providing individuals with the awareness of what is happening to your body and what you can do to manage the situation.

Coaching
Unlike counselling, which can go into depth about various issues, and sometimes dealing with the past. Coaching is more action based focusing on the present and the future. Helping the client to discover and understand who they are, identify what they want and develop strategies to achieve their goals.

Psychological Workplace Support
The Home Office recommends that certain roles require confidential support within the workplace. This is an opportunity for individuals and organisations to consider work/life balance and well-being. Maintaining a healthy workplace and providing an individual and organisational duty of care.

Supervision
Clinical and counselling supervision is available for counselling students, counsellors and managers this usually takes place on a monthly basis.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
