About me

Hello, I'm Mary. I'm an experienced person-centred counsellor and psychotherapist, and I work with individuals aged 16 and over.

I work with both men and women.

I am very happy to work with a wide range of issues, but I specialise in working with:

Trauma:

  • Has something happened to you that you can't forget?
  • Are you anxious and find it difficult to let go of?
  • Is it affecting you in your daily life?

Difficult relationships:

  • Have you had a falling out or disagreement in the family?
  • Are you having difficulties in your relationship with your partner?
  • Did/do you have a difficult relationship with your parents? Is this affecting your relationships now?

Parenting issues:

  • Are you worried about your children?
  • Do you have post-natal depression (women or men)?
  • Are you having a difficult and stressful pregnancy?
  • Have you had a miscarriage, or are you having difficulty conceiving?

Bereavement:

  • Are you finding it hard to cope after someone has died?
  • Do you feel like your grief is "blocked"?
  • Has someone you know committed suicide?

If it would help to talk to someone who will listen to you, who isn't involved in the situation, and who wants to help you to work out the right way forward for you, then please get in touch.

I will provide a confidential space for you, where we will talk together about what's bothering you. We'll go at your pace, in your time. I will help you to unpick and to work out how you really feel about things, as well as the possible reasons behind what's going on.

I will ask the questions that nobody else is asking, and I will be honest with you throughout. This leads to new thoughts and ideas, and new ways of looking at things. Sometimes, these new thoughts and ideas can make everything suddenly click into place.

Together, we'll work out what's going on. Together, we'll find ways in which you can move forwards, in a way that makes sense to you.

About me:

I won't judge you, no matter what issue you bring to counselling.

I listen to you, and when I do, I use all of my skills to try and understand how things feel for you. People say that I'm easy to talk to, that I'm attentive, that I care.

I'm curious. I ask questions, I want to know more, and I want to really understand how things feel for you. This leads to a greater understanding for both of us.

I speak plainly. I will translate any theory I think might help you into plain English. I swear at times, and don't mind in the slightest if you do. You don't need to feel that you need to be polite about things with me - say it how it really is. If everything is a mess, let it be a mess. We will sort it out together.

I'm honest. I will always tell you the truth. You can trust me.

I don't have all the answers. You play an active role in counselling, as you're the person we're learning about. No two people are the same, and it's what is true for you that matters. We will find the answers together, if there are answers to be found.

It can be very daunting to make an appointment to speak to a complete stranger about things that really hurt, or that you're ashamed of, so I will also tell you a bit about me as a human being, and not just a counsellor:

I'm a mum, and I've got two young children.

I used to be a doctor, and I left medicine after getting burnt out and depressed. When I was trying to decide what on earth to do after that, I worked out that the bit of being a doctor that I enjoyed the most was listening to people, hearing their stories, and trying to work out what was going on.

I also had counselling myself at the time, which was amazing. Suddenly, someone was interested in me, and cared about me, what I did and how I felt, not what others thought I "should" feel or do. I could discover who I was, and what was important to me, for the first time.

This experience, which was so valuable, is what made me train as a counsellor. I love what I do, and I feel incredibly privileged that my clients let me into their worlds each day in my therapy room.

When I'm not counselling, I'm usually running around after my children, like many parents! I'm a big believer in the healing power of exercise and being out in nature, so whenever possible I can be found in a forest, on a beach, or up a hill somewhere. I love travelling and exploring new places.

What next?

If you want to learn a bit more about me, and how I work, then please visit my website, marylim.co.uk, call me on 07473 459100, or email me using the button below. I will aim to get back to you within 24 hours (excluding weekends or bank holidays) or on my next working day.

If there is a good time for me to contact you, then please let me know in your message.

I will explain a bit more about how I work, send you any relevant paperwork, and offer to meet with you (face to face, online, or on the phone) for an assessment session, where we talk about what you want to get out of counselling, and start to talk about what's been going on and how you're feeling.

If, after this, you feel you would like to continue counselling with me, then we will arrange further sessions. If not, there's absolutely no obligation to continue.

If I feel that I'm not the right counsellor for you, whether you need someone specialised in a different area, or who works in a different way (CBT for example), I will tell you, and I will offer the names of counsellors who might be able to help you.

Where am I?

My offices are based on the second floor of 42B Worcester Road, in Bromsgrove town centre. I am able to offer face to face, online, and telephone counselling. Please be aware that there are some steep and fairly narrow steps leading to my offices.

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
