About me

I specialise in working with unhelpful repetitive cycles, including anger and addictions. Repetitive patterns might mean something different to you from the next person, so the two of us would focus on getting to know you and your 'patterns' in depth - by looking at what you do now as well as your life history i.e. what brought you to this point in your life.

Do you find that you repeatedly do things that get you down or you regret, or that cause you problems in life? Do you find that your relationships follow the same distressing patterns, or the way you communicate with others gets you stuck in an unsatisfactory or painful loop? Are you drawn to drinking too much to cope with your unhappiness; or do you comfort eat; gamble; get angry at work or at home, or on the road...?

Is the statement 'I've done it again' or 'Why can't I stop this' familiar to you? Do you berate yourself or put yourself down when you repeatedly go round and round a cycle that you just can't seem to get out of? Do you cycle around being too harsh on yourself, or feeling worthless and lacking self confidence?

Does life and stress feel overwhelming, does it play out in an all-or-nothing way, or do you get into vicious circles with anxiety, depression or panic? Do you find it difficult to see yourself in the future free from your particular repeating cycle of thoughts, feelings and behaviour and does that feed into your misery in a way that is exasperating and re-inforces your woeful vicious cycles?

As an example, if you came to me because your relationship with your partner was going wrong and you were drinking too much alcohol to help cope with your unhappiness, we might want to explore your past, the significant events in your life, your attachment patterns, the hurts and the victories, to make some sense of what might be underlying your current patterns. We might also, in parallel, want to look at what is happening in the here-and-now, at your level of self esteem or confidence, at the communication styles you and your partner might be stuck in, and how over-drinking 'helps' you in the short term - be that by being a coping strategy for the unhappiness caused by the struggling relationship - but causes more problems in the long term. We might also directly explore your anxiety, low self esteem, depression, poor craving management etc.

It may be that the low self esteem or anxiety is, in itself, the repeating pattern. Nevertheless, my main focus would be to help you better understand yourself, to better understand your repeating cycle, while concurrently equipping you with skills and strategies to help break up the cycle or manage the draw to 'jump on the merry-go-round' once more.

I am a qualified Integrative Counsellor, which means that I don't use one particular theoretical perspective, but match your needs with my knowledge base. We would work together, collaboratively, in a private, safe, confidential setting, and explore what happens. We may well talk about the issues you are bringing in a direct way; we may explore how it feels for you to come to see me and how the sessions are unfolding.

I see clients at the Palmeira Practice Seven Dials location in Central Brighton and in Lewes town Centre, East Sussex. I can see people on selected times during the day or evening and have some availability at weekends. You would come to see me once a week for 50 minutes. I offer an initial free 30 minute consultation.
