About me

Hello, welcome and thank you for taking the time to read my profile. I am guessing that as you are here perhaps either you or someone close to you are experiencing some difficulties and are wondering if  Counselling is right way forward for you.

If your difficulty is connected to, Anxiety, Depression, Work related issues, Addictions: Alcohol/ illegal drugs (legal highs) /gambling, then perhaps I could be of help to you.

Do you want to work with a Counsellor who does not judge you, offers you respect and a Confidential service?

Do you want your Counsellor to be able to draw on a wealth of experience, which will help you to achieve the necessary lifestyle changes you need to make, for you to move on and lead a more fulfilling, positive and happy life?

A LIITLE BIT MORE ABOUT ME:

I obtained my Diploma in Humanistic Counselling over 10 years ago and have either been employed full time in a counselling practice or in private practice ever since. Prior to this I worked for over 10 years within the criminal justice system, working with homeless offenders offering support and guidance to individuals wanting to make positive life style changes. It was whilst working in this field, I gained an interest in criminal psycology and counselling and so embarked on a 5 year course studying psycology and Counselling....qualifying in 2002.

On qualifying I was offered a full time Counselling position with the Worcestershire Community Alcohol Team. Within a short period of time I was managing the criminal justice service, liaising with the Probation officers and working with their clients who, had offended under the influence of alcohol and were given a court order to address their alcohol consumption.

I have worked within the addiction field since 2002 and since 2014 in private practice working with clients and helping them address many different issue other than addictions, such as Depression, Anxiety, Low Self Esteem, Sexual problems and Work Related issues

I have been working closely with three Employee Assistance Programme, where I have helped many clients address their problems and return to work successfully.

In December 2014 I began working in partnership with the Wolverhampton LGBT Network, offering Counselling and support to people presenting with varied issues.

My work is regulated by the British Association for Counselling and Psycotherapy,  I work within their ethical framework and I am fully insured.

My details can be found on www.bacp.com on Find a Therapist.

A BIT OF INFO ON THE COUNSELLING APPROACH I USE:

Humanistic Counselling.......
recognises the uniqueness of every individual and assumes that everyone has an innate capacity to grow emotionally and psychologically towards the goals of self-actualisation and personal fulfilment, given the right conditions.

As a practicing Humanistic counsellor, I believe that it is not the events in your life that cause you problems, but how you view them and therefore experience those events.

So, how we experience life events will have an impact on how we feel about ourselves and in turn, influence our self-esteem and confidence
I will work with you in a way that you will feel encouraged to learn to understand how your negative responses to your life events can lead to psychological discomfort.

My aim will be to help you explore your own thoughts and feelings and for you to work out your own solutions to your problems.

Psychologist Carl Rogers developed one of the most commonly used humanistic therapies, Client-Centred Counselling or Person Centred Counselling, which encourages the client to concentrate on how they feel at the present moment.

Client-Centred Counselling:The central belief is that we all have inherent resources that enable us to deal with whatever life brings.

As a Client-centred therapist I will focus on my belief that you - and not myself - are the best expert on your own thoughts, feelings, experiences and problems and therefore it is you who is most capable of finding the right solutions for you!
I will not suggest any particular course of action for you to take, make any recommendations, ask probing questions or try to interpret anything you may say. The responsibility for working out your problems will rest wholly with you.
My aim will be to reflect and clarify what you bring into the session.

As a trained client-centred counsellor my aim is to show empathy, warmth and genuineness, which will help develop the right conditions and enable you to gain self-understanding and psychological growth.

These are commonly referred to as Roger's Core Conditions,

  • Empathy involves being able to understand the client’s issues from their own frame of reference.  The counsellor should be able to accurately reflect this understanding back to the client.
  • Warmth is to show the client that they are valued, regardless of anything that happens during the counselling session.  The counsellor must be non-judgmental, accepting whatever the client says or does, without imposing evaluations.
  • Genuineness (sometimes termed congruence) refers to the counsellor's ability to be open and honest and not to act in a superior manner or hide behind a 'professional' facade.

Counselling Sessions:

A counselling session will normally be 50 minutes in duration and will take place at weekly intervals, unless otherwise agreed.

After your initial assessment and we are both happy to continue to work together, we will discuss the counselling contract, which will include things like;

Cancellation policy (please see below)

Setting Boundaries....eg is online/social network contact acceptable?

Confidentiality...what this means and where the law may overide confidentiality and where it does not.

Payment methods.....

Duration of sessions and treatment

Over view of the treatment offered, including any goals discussed

I can now accept payments via paypal.me/ThreshTherapy making it much quicker and easier.

Testimonials

Hi mark

I would like to thank you for your services and support over the past few months.

Having never experienced counselling, and having preconceived ideas, I was extremely impressed by your empathetic yet constructive approach to my issues.

Your relaxed environment allowed me to relax and think clearly, enabling me to de - stress and be more positive.

I am now in control and feel like my old self again.

Thanks again for all your help.

Best wishes,

Mark Thresh Counsellor

I was sent by work to see Mark after a period of absence from work after losing my farther and a bout of severe depression.

While I was being treated by my GP for the depression and anxiety with medication I was still struggling with the bereavement.

After the first session with mark it was clear that the depression had been triggered by the loss of my father but the anxiety and depression was also being fed by other factors.

Through the six sessions with mark, he grew his trust with me allowing me to open up more to thoughts that I had suppressed within myself. This was gained through gentle thought evoking questions, that helped me explore within myself and realise the feelings concerns and events that I have put deep within myself are having a ongoing effect on my life.

Speaking with Mark has enabled me to speak to my partner of how I really felt in side and allowed me to open up with real feelings and thoughts and to stop hiding behind the facade I put up in front of myself.

Marks calm none intrusive style really helped me to relax throughout these counselling sessions and changed from the at the start of the course going with trepidation to the last session when I was wishing there were more to come.

Mark has a professional attitude at all time but with his relaxed nature and demur, he allows you to relax into a friendly warm environment, which to me allowed myself to trust him with my fears and anxieties.

I would recommend anyone to seek out Marks services in these fields it is difficult to explain how I feel after these sessions in words. One word that I came to the conclusion of that has made me feel I am moving forward was lighter; I have found a way to release some of my shackles.

S A

I found working with Mark to be a very positive experience.

He has great insight into how to guide his clients.

He has the ability to get to the core issues very quickly.

He also demonstrated his ability in a family situation.

He was very helpful in my particular case.

RH

Over 6 weeks Mark helped me to identify damaging thought processes and taught me how to intervene with healthier thoughts, which I am continuing to do on a daily basis. Mark put me at ease from our first meeting and I felt that I could talk freely and without judgement. The things that he helped me realise and understand have had a real impact upon my daily life and I would happily recommend him to anybody thinking of taking that first step towards a more positive life.

SZ

"Mark was extremely helpful in counselling me to reduce my alcohol intake which had been slowly creeping up over the years.

Mark's experience working clients with alcohol and other addictions helped me to understand what is happening to the body/mind which gave reassurance and support that I could get this under control, I particularly liked the calm approach and professional way the sessions are.

This for me was a far better option than an alcohol detox clinic, I would recommend Mark to anyone who has addiction problems"

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I am also trained in Auricular Acupuncture, a treatment specifically for addictions. Auricular (ear) acupuncture is a specialised complimentary therapy that enables the body to restore its natural energy balance and improve general well being. The aim of auricular acupuncture as a treatment method is to reduce stress and anxiety and help alleviate the sensations of withdrawal and craving; this is done through the insertion of small needles in specific points on the outer ear.
This treatment is available as an adjunct to Counselling only.
