Mark E Haslam & Associates
Hello and welcome to my St Helens private counselling practice. Friendly and immediate professional help that is tailored to your individual needs. Flexible, cost effective therapy from an experienced and established therapist.
To achieve maximum benefit from the counselling sessions, it is important to ensure there is a good "fit" between therapist and client, before undertaking the work. Also careful consideration is needed to establish whether the "problems " that a client is having difficulty with are suitable for counselling.
I offer a free initial 30 minute consultation for us to discuss what is troubling, and to decide on the best way forward.
After the initial consultation, there is no obligation to continue. If we decide to work together after the initial consultation, then we can arrange further appointments, as and when required. I offer flexible appointments from 7.00am and my last appointment ends at 8.00pm Monday to Friday with some Saturday/Sundays available.
If you would like to make an appointment or find out more about the services I offer, please contact me by telephone or email, or browse my website at the top of this page. I will be happy to talk to you about my counselling and healing practice. Feel free to ask any questions you may have, to help you decide whether you would like book a consultation.
Free initial 30 minute consultation
We can explore your current situation together and any goals you may have, which will help in determining the best support for you. The aim is for us to decide together whether counselling/psychotherapy or healing would be most suitable for you, or if a referral to another service would be more appropriate.
I offer brief time limited work and open ended work. If we decide to work together, we would negotiate and agree on an initial number of sessions with a review date so that we can monitor the benefit that you will be receiving from our work together. At the review we can decide whether to end or continue the work.
Feedback from some clients suggest significant benefit has arisen from just one session. Some clients may just need a few sessions to clarify their current situation and make decisions about a particular problem. Others prefer to work more long term to help them discover new possibilities and make changes, so that they can lead a more satisfying and meaningful life.
Please note you are free to end your therapy at any point. However, if you are deciding to end, it can prove useful for both client and therapist to have an ending session, to work through any left over process from the work. Past and current clients have reported the ending session as providing a powerful and valuable opportunity for two way reflection and feedback on positive progress achieved during therapy, along with a deeper engagement in life.
Back in 1996 I began my main helping career working with older people with dementia.
Following this, I trained as a Mentor helping people to successfully overcome barriers to employment. It was during the mentoring I became aware that underpinning some clients barriers to employment, lay deeper feelings of diminished self worth, low confidence, anxiety, anger and relationship difficulties, amongst others.
I learned a lot about myself and cultivated qualities such as patience, compassion and understanding in these relationships.
It was primarily in these relationships that my intuition and further training needs led me to enter the therapeutic counselling field. During my counselling training, I entered therapy as a client. This was in part a requirement of the course. This experience provided me with a valuable window of opportunity to work through some personal material which had surfaced. This was my first hand experience of the person centred approach as client which enabled me to experience for myself the effectiveness on many levels that this approach had on me.
To be heard, understood, and experience an unconditional valuing from my therapist, enabled me to examine aspects of me that I was struggling with back then, grow through them and change, enabling me to become more in touch with my inner self and connect more outwardly with others and live my life in a way that continues to be extremely satisfying.
about me contd....
During my training and beyond, I spent a number of years working therapeutically with survivors of sexual violence, and with an agency specialising in bereavement and loss.
From 2004-2014 I successfully delivered counselling/therapeutic services for Wigan Metropolitan Council.
For the Council, I provided individual counselling, and couple counselling to adults, individual counselling work with children and young people involved in social care, individual counselling for adult carers (loss and bereavement) and counselling adults who use the Surestart children centres, along with therapeutic group work.
Some client experiences I frequently work with, are relational difficulties, anger, depression, trust, hurt, domestic violence, anxiety, bereavement and loss, body image and self esteem and stress management.
I also delivered group work, workshops, training, and in-house supervision for trainee and qualified counsellors as part of my role in the Local Council.
My associate colleagues are trained in various therapeutic modalities also, and I am in a position to refer potential clients to other individual specialist colleagues who may offer alternative ways of working to ensure you receive the best possible help to achieve a positive outcome.
Traditionally Counselling or Psychotherapy, two terms I use interchangeably are "talking therapies." Research by Roger Sperry (1973) shows the separate functions of the two hemispheres of the brain. The mode of the left brain is thinking, analytic, judgemental, verbal. The right brain non verbal, spontaneous, creative, intuitive, non-judgemental.
In therapy, it can happen that by "talking about", the client can stay in his/her left side of the brain, and not connect with repressed material on the right side of the brain- the very material needed for integration.
I am trained in Person Centred Art Therapy skills, which can enable you to utilize both right and left hemispheres of the brain, thus providing you with an all round therapeutic experience to maximize your potential for growth and personal development.
I use a variety of art materials such as paint, pastels, clay, collage and sandtray work. I regularly use these materials with adults, children and young people, and on myself to increase self awareness.
There is no artistic ability required, it is more about the process you work through whilst using your chosen media rather than producing an "artistic masterpiece." All that is required is an openness to work with the materials.
I have discovered that using the arts are powerful ways of working, that can enable you to reach the crux of your concerns safely, in a remarkably short time frame, enabling increases in self awareness and integration to take place.
There will be no pressure or expectations from me for you to work in any particular way, we can explore what may be beneficial for you. You work at your own pace.
I have now reached a stage in my life, whereby my intuition naturally guides me to set aside more time in continuing to develop my established private practice.
I am able to offer you flexible appointments tailored to your unique requirements, and always give 100% to helping people to develop, grow and change in ways that are right for them.
My therapy room is located in St Helens, WA9 Merseyside.
