Maria Totman Dip.couns.Dip.psychotherapy(UKCP)
I am an experienced and accredited counsellor and psychotherapist with over 20 years in practice.
Important in my work is the telling of a story; this story can be happening right now or it can be a story which includes the past. As each person is unique so is their individual story and this is heard with compassion, attentiveness and sensitivity.
I believe the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist is of utmost importance in order to explore issues of a painful and sensitive nature.
I work with many areas and issues. These include relationship difficulties, grief and bereavement, childhood trauma, loneliness and depression, loss of meaning in one's life. I also work with dreams.
On a practical level, sessions usually run once a week with regular reviews at agreed intervals. All sessions are completely confidential. I practice from my own home.

Sometimes at different stages of our lives we can experience a loss of meaning. I am able to work alongside the client in these transitional times.
I have experience of working with clients in nervous breakdowns and have seen that very often these breakdowns contain a spiritual essence.
I have experience working with dreams, as doorways to the inner world, and see the dreams as a gift from the Psyche.
In my practice I have worked with clients undergoing much grief and suffering. This grief is given attention, time and compassion.
I have been teaching psychology for some years and am extremely interested in the ideas of C.J. Jung, James Hillman, and Ginette Paris to name a few. I feel Imagination and the Arts have a significant place in Psychotherapy and depth Psychology.
