Maria Bellis (Siepe)
I am an accredited Counsellor and Psychotherapist in south Bristol. I offer warm, sensitive support, adapted to your need and pace, to deal with what ever you are facing right now. I am a Gestalt Psychotherapist working with a variety of issues. I have an interest in how we may limit ourselves through our thinking and pattern of behaviours. It is often our relationship with ourselves that affects many of our issues in life. Gestalt focuses on understanding issues or patterns in our lives holistically so we can increase choices and find our own resolution. People adapt to situations for a variety of reasons. I often describe therapy as enabling us to 'increase our repertoire' rather than having to give up what we do. If we expand what we know we can do we have more choice.
I find considering change can sometimes be difficult but is also rewarding, and speaking with someone objective like a therapist is often helpful to check out how we think and feel about something. You don't have to 'need' therapy but it can be a useful tool to reflect and consider what you want.
My aim is to support you to meet your own needs and find your own solutions. I believe that change is possible and together we work out what you need. Therapy can support people to build their own 'toolkit' of skills and knowledge to create the resilience they may need with aspects of life.
My style of working as a Counsellor and Psychotherapist is to work with people to develop their confidence in themselves to resolve their own issues and manage whatever ups and downs present. I gained extensive experience of many life situations, issues and relationships as an adult care social worker for 30 years. I now work therapeutically with people as a Therapist and Counsellor as I believe in the possibilities of change, recovery and adaptations in our lives.
I work with many issues such as anxiety; low mood or depression; low self esteem or confidence; bereavement or loss; stress management or work issues; recovery from childhood experiences; repairing relational patterns and many other life situations. We can work short term or long term, on specific issues or general.
My Availability: I work weekdays and some evenings- if you have a specific need you can clarify my availability via email before considering making direct contact.
Making contact: I welcome telephone contact to explore issues with no obligation as I find this a useful step in getting to know each other. You can email me to arrange telephone contact or ring direct and leave a short message if I am not there. This telephone introduction involves about 10 minutes to briefly check what you are looking for, what I may offer, session availability etc. Then you decide whether you would like to come for a face to face first session.
The first session: The first introductory session is at a reduced fee and confidential. We clarify your aims and I explain about how I may work with your issues. You do not have to tell me everything in a first session- just enough to inform me about what you would like to work on. I also explain more about counselling, therapy and my practice. It is then up to you whether you book another session or have more time to think about your options.
Ongoing sessions: We will clarify whether you want to work on a specific issue short term or continue long term. I always have a review after the first few weeks to check that we are on track for what you want. My personal style is warm and friendly to support you and develop how we work together. My job is to facilitate the process of counselling and therapy to enable exploration and working things out together. I consider you are very much a collaborator in this process. My aim is that when you finish your series of sessions you will feel more confident so you can manage your issues yourself.
