Joan Stockitt M.A (Counselling) ACC accredited
I am a qualified counsellor with over twenty years of experience. As a person centred counsellor, I aim to help you gain insight into your responses when you are faced with a life situation which is difficult to handle. Feelings like anxiety, anger, being out of control and problems in relating to others can all be helped by counselling. Renewed understanding enables you to see what constructive changes may be appropriate. I have training and experience working with both couples and individuals on a variety of issues.
Sessions for individuals and couples last approximately 60 minutes. In each session you can expect me to listen attentively and encourage you to articulate what you need to explore. All sessions are confidential.

I am passionate about the benefits of long-term, committed adult love relationships. My experiences with Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy have convinced me even more that love can be kept alive for many decades.
Very often we develop ways of relating that are hurtful to each other but we seem to get stuck, disliking the pattern but unable to change it. No matter what the presenting issue is, both partners take up their positions and the outcome is somewhat inevitable.
The goal of counselling is not to find out who is most at fault and make them change nor is it improving communication skills although that can help. Rather the couple is encouraged to share honestly with each other and take risks, in the counsellor’s presence, to experience something new.
It can be transforming to discover that your own and your partner’s seemingly unloving behaviour comes from the cry which is in every heart: “are you there for me?”
My person-centred approach means that you, the client, set the pace and the agenda. You will be listened to attentively and with respect in a safe, confidential environment. I have training and experience working with a variety of issues.
