Hello, I offer a confidential, empathic, professional and friendly Eating Disorder Counselling Service in Scarborough, North Yorkshire which helps both adults and children (from age 11 upwards) who are experiencing a range of eating disorders; namely, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder; as well as all other food related problems, eating problems, dieting issues, weight or size issues, body shape anxieties and food/eating phobias.
I also offer help with other general debilitating life problems which can affect every day living and may or may not form part of an eating disorder - such as anxiety, general anxiety disorder, grief, stress, self harm, anger management, insomnia, panic attacks, depression, family issues and relationship problems, to name but a few. Outline of My Service
Helping you to break free from your eating disorder and issues around food and weight management. Everyone needs to eat, and I am here to support you to eat sensibly, regularly and healthily and break that cycle of addiction and adverse eating habits. A healthy mind is the key to a healthy approach to eating, food and life. I will help you by motivating, empowering and facilitating you to turn negative experiences and negative thought patterns into positive energy by seeing them as learning experiences and stepping stones on a journey, rather than setbacks. My Cognitive Behavioural techniques will address your negative thought patterns which lead or contribute to emotional disturbance and, in turn, then contribute to disordered eating and other adverse behaviours. Eating disorders are never about eating and food - they are about the emotional turmoil behind the actions.
What you can expect in your first introductory session
Your first session will be a 30 minute appointment where we can get to know each other. It will provide you with a private, informal, empathic, non-judgmental and confidential space to discuss an outline of your problem(s). It will also give you the opportunity to find out what counselling is, what counselling involves and if you feel it will be helpful to you.
How can counselling help?
I will help you to obtain an all round more positive approach to life in general, by exploring the personal or psychological problems which typically underly issues. Working together will offer you new techniques which can be learnt and used when required and together we will identify and address unhelpful triggers which may be keeping your difficulties going. Working on these will enable change to happen. In addition, I will help you to boost your self-esteem, develop your inner strength and ultimately motivate and guide you to a better life, in which you reach your true potential. Unhelpful thinking patterns will be addressed, enabling you to experience things more positively and, in turn, change your behaviour and actions.
Help with eating and food
I look forward to helping and supporting you to develop a healthy relationship with food, as often behaviour around food can be akin to an addiction; and that addiction needs to be faced at every mealtime, which makes eating issues particularly distressing. If you feel that you are trapped in a vicious circle with food, that you are skipping meals, or that you are constantly comfort eating/bingeing, then I can help you on the road to recovery. Learn how to view your body as the amazing machine that it is, and start using that body to live and enjoy life to the full.

Whether your problems are related to stress, anxiety, trauma, confidence, low self-esteem, depression or family orientated issues, to name but a few, I will help you to explore these and together we will look at strategies that you can use every day to help eliminate your issues or distress.

I regularly integrate Person Centred counselling into my Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) integrative practice in order to facilitate deeper empathic understanding and listening skills.
I often incorporate the use of Mindfulness techniques for relaxation purposes, for boosting self-esteem and for an uplifting sense of wellbeing. Learn how to meditate, if you wish, and appreciate every moment. Start 'being' present rather than rushing around in 'doing' mode so that important life experiences are no longer overlooked and each step of life's journey is experienced fully.

Group therapy sessions are available too, initially for those who binge, overeat or comfort eat - more groups to follow. Group counselling allows you to meet others who have similiar issues to yourself and to hear about their experiences - a problem shared is a problem halved and learning from others can be invaluable. Training, qualifications & experience
I am a fully qualified Counsellor with the following qualifications:
- BA (Hons) in Counselling
- Foundation Degree in The Theory & Practice of Counselling
- University Foundation Award in Counselling Skills
- Diploma in Working with Children and Adolescents
- Safeguarding Children Level 2 Intermediate
- NCFE Level 2 in Understanding Nutrition and Health
- Registered MBACP.
My counselling training involved 4 years of extensive and intensive University Degree training. Part of this training led to me undertaking two counselling placements; one within a Drug and Alcohol Addiction Service; and the other within the Probation Service. Both of these services offered me opportunities to work with and experience a large variety of issues and problems from multiple clients. During this work, I discovered that working with anxiety, stress, depression, low self esteem, motivation, self harm, emotional issues and eating disorders to be of particular interest; this interest being driven from both close-hand personal experiences as well as the professional experiences.
In addition, I have experience of providing both one-to-one personal therapy, as well as group therapy; which was one of the advantages of undertaking two separate placements, rather than just one.
