About me

I see individual adults for both short and long term counselling or psychotherapy.  The type and length of therapy will depend on what you are seeking.  My background is in education, social services and the NHS.  It is quite common for clients to start by seeing me once a week but I am quite flexible and some long term clients decide they wish to come only once a month or so.  Many clients have issues that can be helped in 6 to 10 sessions - we will discuss this at the first, assessment session.  Other clients have more complex issues and want to leave the number of sessions open.  My website has some more information about the way I work.

Deciding to approach a therapist is not easy.  I can be contacted by email which I check several times a day usually.  When you phone my mobile, you are most likely to reach my voicemail which is checked at least once a day usually.

Actually coming to the first session can be quite daunting.  My therapy room is in a business centre which houses many different types of businesses.  This gives a measure of anonymity to the purpose of your visit.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am an accreditated senior therapist registered with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.  I have a Post Graduate Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy - which means I can use different ways of working with you depending on what you need.  I have been working as a counsellor and psychotherapist in West Lothian since 1993.  Part of my work is with companies who want to offer their employees time limited counselling and I have seen clients from government agencies, local authorities, the third sector and private companies.  The other part of my work is with clients who have self-referred - when you phone me, we can discuss whether I would be someone that could help.  My clients have come from a variety of backgrounds - shop assistant, nurse, driver, prison officer, accountant, social worker, lecturer, people working in call centres and on assembly lines are some examples.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Key details

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
