About me

I am able to offer sessions face to face on Tuesday and Thursdays, online, or by telephone on Wednesdays .

Do you find you make the same mistakes, that life throws the same curve ball and you get fed up with it; Counselling I believe can help. I understand however, that seeking and asking for help can feel frightening or feel like a weakness, exposing even. I however, believe it is a brave step and asking for help is a strength; getting this far is the first step. It is you looking after yourself.

Please do look at my website: www.louisedeanecounselling.co.uk

I work with adults who are experiencing symptoms of:

  • Anxiety.
  • Depression.
  • Low self esteem.
  • Low self worth.
  • Loss in its various forms.
  • Lack of purpose in life and things just getting too much to bear.
  • Relationship difficulties.
  • Domestic abuse.

I also offer consultations to parents who are struggling. Issues I have worked with.

  • Blended families.
  • Loss of a child to adoption and the care system.
  • Parental adoption issues e.g. post adoption depression, loss of not having a birth child.
  • Being overwhelmed by the role of parenting.
  • Being confused and overwhelmed by a child’s behaviour.

What I can offer you.

  • A supportive and safe environment.
  • Warmth and compassion.
  • Confidentiality and no judgement.
  • Support to build trust whilst gently challenging those thoughts that interfere and cause you distress.
  • Respect and acceptance.

My counselling approach is Integrative which means I do not adhere to or use one theoretical model or approach, I like to think of this as having different tools (strategies) in a tool box which I use if needs be; it really means I can be creative and use whatever might be helpful for you. The most important theoretical informant for me is Attachment Theory, which basically means I am interested in and curious about your childhood experience, what ever that might have been, and how echoes from then can resonate in our later lives.

I do not offer advice or make decisions for you, or about your difficulties, but I will help you explore the thoughts and feelings you are having and help you think about choices. Counselling can be a powerful agent to help clear the wood from the trees, make changes in your life so you can develop and grow as a person.

Counselling is not magic, there are no tricks. I like to think of it as engaging in a therapeutic conversation. Laughter is allowed and does happen.

My hope for you is for you feel you have grown, gained understanding and confidence

Training, qualifications & experience

Experience.

Like many who become therapists I came to this work via a circuitous route of life, work and complex relationships; very much like everyone.

I have experience in the voluntary sector, such as Homestart and Samaritans and have worked with families, children and individuals for over 30 years.

I started out in hospitality moved into voluntary work, teacher training then social care. My initial qualification was in children's social care and I worked in frontline settings in the social care sector, working for 10 years with those within the safeguarding and care system, then a further 10 years in adoption and their families. I have also worked in CAMHS, education and in volunteer posts for charities. I have extensive knowledge and understanding of the impact of developmental trauma, separation and loss.

I worked for many years in organisations where expectations and targets are part of everyday life and understand that work can be a highly pressurized environment as well as giving us our identity. I recognize that the world of work, the pressures of family, relationships, hopes and desires can lead us to overwhleming feelings of anxiety and depression, maybe disappointment. Being part of a family means I have personally experienced many of the challenges and difficulties that life can throw at us. I am a big believer in the concept of personal growth and curiosity about how we respond in the way we do; I prefer the idea of asking what happened as opposed to asking why.

Below is an example of some of the areas of interest in which I have received training.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

After initially making contact I offer a free 15 min telephone or video consultation when you can give me brief details of what it is you would like to talk about and discuss fees and cancellation policy. Or you can book an initial session when you can get a sense of how sessions work, we can get a sense of each other and you have to opportunity to tell me in detail what you would like to address.

The first session I like to take a personal history and discuss some bureaucratic details, but I have also found that some people find that taking this step is so big that they just want to off load, that is fine the rest can come later.
