Louise Bowtell FdSc MBACP
I provide support with warmth and respect, providing a confidential and safe setting where clients have the opportunity to talk, looking at difficult and often confusing feelings, thoughts and behaviours. I base how I work on the Person Centred Approach; an approach which embraces the whole of a person, trusting that each of us has our own resources and internal knowledge to find the answers we're looking for.
My intention is to offer an integrity and openness in how I engage with my clients, encouraging clients to explore how they relate to themselves and to others. I believe that everyone, given the right conditions, has the capacity to change. I follow my clients' lead in what they choose to bring to counselling and by listening actively, attending to what I'm hearing and experiencing, and checking this out, I am able to help clients find clarity and choice in how they can go forwards with their life. My aim is to facilitate change in the way clients have been thinking, feeling and behaving whether this is by helping them to unravel a particular problem, or by looking together at more complicated and deep rooted issues.
I offer a free consultation for us to meet and look at what brings you to counselling. It is important that you feel comfortable with me and I believe that our relationship itself is vital to how successful counselling will be for you. Naturally there would be no obligation for you to continue coming if you felt you would be better suited to seeing another counsellor. Similarly if I felt that another specialist counsellor/counselling model would benefit you, I would recommend this.
I am an experienced therapist and a member of the BACP (MBACP) and as such I am committed to the adherence of their Ethical Framework for Good Practice. I have regular supervision, enabling me to explore my own processes in my client work and ensuring that the relationship and service that I offer to clients is therapeutically responsible and effective. I am fully insured.

I currently work with adults, teenagers and children from my private practice. I initially gained experience of working with young people with the Place2Be, providing play therapy and counselling in a primary school in Croydon for 3 years and more recently, initially as a volunteer for The Dialogue Therapeutic Services counselling teenagers in a secondary school, followed by working as a self employed counsellor in a Brighton secondary school. These settings have provided me with a deep understanding of the need that many children and teenagers have to express themselves and feel heard in a nonjudgmental and relaxed environment. With the premise of respecting a young person's perceptions and needs, I offer a supportive relationship where they are able to explore how they relate to themselves and to others. I believe that my own transparency and openness encourages the growth of their self awareness and understanding.
While I trained and after qualifying, I worked for 2 years with Breakeven, an organisation that offers counselling to gamblers wanting to control their addiction, and also to clients who are affected by gambling (i.e as partners/parents of gamblers.) I developed an appreciation of the complexities involved with dependency and addiction; the 'relationship' that individuals have with the addiction, as well as the difficulties that other family members experience while they are also living with the addiction and behaviour.
