Lorraine Thomas BSc (Hons) Creative and Expressive Art Therapies
After recently moving to the South Hams, I have set up my practice as a Counsellor/Psychotherapist and Clinical Supervisor within the beautiful Dartington Estate, I also have availability to see clients in central Paignton. I have worked as a psychotherapist and supervisor for over fifteen years and my experience and strengths encompass one-to-one, group and family therapy. I have extensive experience of working with children and teenagers having worked in the community, schools and colleges across the United Kingdom.
Alongside my private practice as a psychotherapist, I work part time for The Children’s Society (Checkpoint, Torbay) as a Counselling Project Worker and Clinical Supervisor. In this post I have facilitated Continued Professional Development with both qualified and counsellors in training. I am also committed to my own Continuing Professional Development and aim to ensure that my knowledge and skills are always up to date to ensure best practice.
I am an Integrative Therapist and have experience working with adults individually, couples and groups of all ages using talking therapies including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Positive Psychology. I am particularly skilled in the use of creative and expressive art therapies believing thoroughly in their efficacy. The best effects in therapy rely on the relationship that develops and the work that is visited between therapist and client. In order to achieve this, I offer a warm, empathic and confidential service to children, young people and adults who may be experiencing a range of difficulties in their lives.
I have worked with many issues that people experience in their lives including grief and loss, bullying, self-esteem, identity, sexuality, depression, anxiety, stress, sexual abuse, relationship issues, eating disorders, low self-confidence, PTSD and domestic abuse; the list is extensive.
I offer long-term or short-term counselling and psychotherapy.
Children and Young People
I specialise in working with children and young people of all ages and employ a variety of therapeutic interventions dependent upon the needs of each client. For younger children or those seeking a more creative way of working, I utilise my experience with the creative and expressive arts using materials such as clay, paint and play therapy. My aim is to work with each unique person building a relationship of trust. This will enable them to feel safe enough to explore whatever they wish in order to help them understand their worries and concerns and make sense of, and where appropriate, to make changes in their worlds.

Further Training and Professional Development
I am committed to and have consistently undertaken professional development opportunities. This year I completed my Certificate in Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and also The Triple P Parenting Programme. Last year I attended the Mental Health First Aid for Youth training which helps professionals to identify and work with mental health conditions which specifically affect young people. I have attended several courses in Solution Focused Skills (2014), Domestic Violence, Drug Education and Safeguarding Children. My practice continues to develop and I ensure that I update my training regularly including looking at specific subject areas such as self harm, depression and other areas which regularly present in counselling and psychotherapy. In October of this year I will begin study with The Association for Family Therapy and Systemic Practice on their Foundation Level Course.
