About me

Counselling, for me, was a lifeline, and it has helped get me through some difficult times in my life, so I understand how it feels to be struggling. Counselling changed my life and has helped me to be comfortable in my own skin. I have worked to manage my own anxiety and low mood, so I relate to how it feels to be finding life tough.

I am originally from Glasgow, and I trained as a counsellor because I know from first-hand experience that counselling really does work, and how it can make a massive difference in your life. Counsellors are often ‘wounded healers’ and I appreciate the value of working with a therapist who can fully empathise with how it feels to need support.

I am a BACP Senior Accredited counsellor and psychotherapist in Formby, Liverpool, covering Crosby, Southport, Maghull, Ormskirk, Ainsdale, Birkdale and surrounding areas in a private and peaceful purpose-built garden room (see pictures).

I have been in private practice for many years, following positions within HMP LIverpool, a bereavement service and a general counselling service in Liverpool.

Fees and Availability

Counselling sessions are £40 for individuals and £50 for couples for 50 minutes. An initial 30-minute session, at £20, is also available.

I am also registered with insurers including AXA and Aviva.

I work face-to-face, and I also work extensively on phone, FaceTime, WhatsApp, Zoom and Skype. The best way to contact me is email or text as I’m unable to answer calls when I’m working. I will respond to messages the same day.

Appointments are available Monday to Friday, 10.30am till 5pm. As a general guide, after four sessions you should begin to feel a shift in your thinking and feelings. Counselling doesn’t have to mean a big investment, in terms of time and money. And you don’t have to commit to any number of sessions - how often you have therapy and for how long is your choice. My view is that if you are thinking about therapy, try one session - you’ll then know if the therapist and the timing is right for you.

I work with many people who dip in and out of therapy, often returning just when they feel they need support, or having regular check-in sessions.

Why Counselling?

For me, counselling cleared the fog that was making me feel 'stuck', and I now have a greater awareness and acceptance of who I really am. I know how it feels to experience the sense of isolation that worries and concerns can bring.

The relief of sharing feelings and being understood and accepted can be life-changing.

Services

I offer a talking therapy which can help to explore feelings and memories that may be preventing you from living life the way you'd like to live it. Anxiety, for example, is likely to have a root cause or causes, and by processing feelings that may be supressed, the symptoms of anxiety can lessen. I also offer CBT if that is helpful for you.

I offer a confidential counselling service for anyone, including young adults over the age of 10. I also offer Facetime, Whatsapp, Skype or telephone counselling.

Venue

Counselling is not in my own home - the therapy room is in a purpose-built garden room which offers peace and complete confidentiality. I am located very close to Formby train station, so it is easy to travel to from other areas. I also offer a worldwide confidential counselling via Facetime, Whatsapp, Skype or phone - you can be anywhere in the world.

My Experience - and Your Issues

I have specialist experience in anxiety, depression, panic attacks, bereavement, generalised anxiety disorder, relationship issues, couples counselling, hormone issues, including the menopause, fertility issues, including preparing for IVF, addiction, miscarriage, postnatal issues, health anxiety, ADHD and ASD, neurodiversity, post-traumatic stress disorder, recovering from illness, medical trauma and self-esteem. However, I have experience in most concerns, and I will help with almost all other issues, such as family issues, anger, phobias, alcohol and drug issues, OCD, phobias and fear.

I also have experience working with young people preparing for exams, struggling with issues at school or making career decisions.

I have also worked within a prison, for a bereavement service and for a service offering general counselling to all.

For me, counselling is about offering a safe, non-judgemental and accepting environment where you can work through your concerns. Feeling safe during counselling is the key, and all the services I offer are completely confidential - this allows you to really explore your fears, concerns and issues.

I have extensive experience working with:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • panic
  • bereavement
  • loss
  • family issues
  • divorce
  • generalised anxiety disorder
  • relationship concerns
  • couples counselling
  • post-natal depression
  • family issues
  • postnatal depression
  • medical anxiety
  • trauma
  • addiction
  • abusive relationships
  • phobias
  • infertility

I offer support for a further whole range of issues - divorce, substance or alcohol dependency, eating disorders, anxiety resulting from medical concerns, anger and trauma. This is not an exhaustive list - there are many other issues which may bring you to counselling, and I will endeavour to support you, whatever your worries or concerns. I trained as a person-centred counsellor, which is a talking therapy, however I also provide CBT and integrative counselling.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

I trained as a counsellor after therapy helped and supported me through a difficult time. Counselling changed the way I live my life, and, having had the experience of being both a client and a counsellor, I passionately believe counselling can make a real difference.

My experience tells me counselling works - it really does, and it can be life-changing. It helps bring a sense of coping back into your life and works towards helping you accept who you are, without relying on the judgment of others. The confidential nature of counselling allows you to express yourself like you probably never have, in a safe and accepting environment. It's very powerful and can be the answer to many issues.
