How Counselling Can Help
During the course of our lives we can face times of difficulty and distress. Our emotions and feelings may seem confused and overwhelming, we may feel we are all alone, and find it difficult to cope. Sometimes we just feel lost or "stuck" with no sense of direction. We may be aware there are changes needed, but are fearful or unsure about taking that next step. I will work alongside you to help you understand or deal with the issues you are facing, in a sensitive and non judgemental way. Telling an independent unbiased person how we feel can release a great burden, and then frees us to start looking at the events or issues that are going on. Sometimes we have behaviours that we know are self destructive, counselling can help identify and work towards changing those to more positive behaviours.
A Bit About Me and How I will Work with You
I am a fully qualified Integrative Counsellor who works with a variety of counselling methods to suit you, and the difficulties or challenges you are facing. This may be through short term goal focused therapy aimed at a specific issue or behavoiur, a deeper exploration of your feelings and/or life story, or something in between. Every person and their situation is unique therefore the counselling experience will also be unique. As your counsellor I will offer you support and guidance where required, a sounding board, a quiet listening ear when you just need to be heard, or a coach helping formulate life goals. Our relationship will be based on mutual trust and respect, and my counselling rooms will provide you with a safe environment to explore the issues or challenges you are facing.
What can Counselling Help With ?
Counselling can help you deal with events, feelings, emotions, that are causing you some distress, fear, dissatisfaction. You may know what the issue is, or you may feel troubled but not sure why. Counselling helps explore what is going on, and increase your self awareness of your thoughts and feelings. It is not a magic wand and cannot make events disappear, but it works with you on how you deal with those things, and how you react. Counselling can be used for many areas including stress, low mood, depression, low self-esteem, anxiety, bereavement/grief, relationships, suicidal feelings. I also use Mindfulness techniques to help with relaxation where appropriate.
What to Expect at your First Session
If you decide you would like to try counselling you can contact me via phone or email, and we can arrange an appointment. The first appointment will be a gentle discussion on what you are hoping to get from the counselling. I understand that you may feel quite apprehensive when coming to your first appointment but be assured we will go very much at your own pace and stay within your comfort levels and boundaries. It is also your opportunity to gauge if I am somebody you want to work with as our relationship is critical to the counselling process. If you decide you would like to continue we will discuss how we will proceed, agree whether we meet weekly/fortnightly/other, face to face etc.
To be accessible to a range of locations I have quiet, comfortable counselling space in Inverurie, and Banchory. I also appreciate that physically going to see a counsellor can sometimes be difficult due to your own location, time constraints, or other circumstances, therefore I do offer online appointments through Skype, Email, and Instant Messenger. We can discuss which method would be most suitable for you.
