I am a qualified relational counsellor and trainee psychotherapist, holding an Advanced Diploma in Child and Family counselling and psychotherapy. I am also a highly experienced paediatric and general nurse with over 40 years experience of children and families in the NHS and private sector. In addition I have experience of working with children who have special needs and/or challenging behaviour.
I have a private practice in Uckfield, East Sussex, open to children, young people, couples, individuals and families. I incorporate various theories into my practice including Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, CBT and Person Centred. Alongside these I also integrate creative techniques and play therapy.
My practice covers many aspects of life's stresses - relational issues including family, marital, peer and social relationships. Management of anxiety, stress and anger. Separation, grief and loss, challenging behaviour, self esteem, parenting, family dynamics and other life issues
Although my primary interest lies in working with parents, children and adolescents, helping them to explore their development, attachment systems and interpersonal relationships, as well as peer, social and family pressures.
I also work with couples and families where communication and/or relationship difficulties have arisen, to help them explore their perceptions, beliefs and feelings, and work towards healthier more satisfying relationships.
Whether child, young person or adult I believe the primary factors in a successful therapeutic relationship and outcome are - respect, acceptance and empathy, along with mutual consent and participation in the process.
Sessions are 50 minutes, the first session is an introduction to the process and assessment of your needs and goals, where we will discuss what has brought you to counselling and what you would like to gain from it. I will also inquire about your general health, family and support network. Subsequent sessions are by mutual arrangement.
A reduced fee is available for young children and those on low income.
I am fully insured and a member of the United Kingdom Association of Transactional Analysts (UKATA) and adhere to their code of professional and ethical practice.

Although much of my experience has been managing children and families within the hospital setting, I also have experience in working with children and young people with special needs and challenging behaviour, and am skilled in parenting, family dynamics, attachment, adolescence, and behavioural issues.
My work with children and families has given me insight into family dynamics and how our interpersonal relationships can be recreated in our external relationships.
We all go through periods of stress in our lives, and how we deal with these stresses is greatly dependent on the strengths and weaknesses of our original family bonds. Increased stress will often throw up old wounds and hurts from the past which will interfere with the way we manage stress and close relationships, and it is often these wounds that need healing for us to manage our relationships more positively.

My aim is to provide a safe empathic space for those who are finding the challenges in their life too great to manage alone, to enable them to air their fears, fantasies and feelings, without the fear of judgement, and to help them explore their difficulties in order to find new and more positive ways to see themselves, their relationships and the challenges with which life presents us.
I work with the therapeutic relationship, exploring communication, friendships, stress management, self worth, family and other networks that can be used as a means of support. I promote self care, self esteem, active listening and positive motivation and thinking.
Our most important relationship is with ourself, if we find it difficult to be kind, considerate and accepting of ourselves and our limitations, how much more difficult is it to truly accept and forgive others.
