Profile
I am a person centred and cognitive behavioural therapist with a deep belief in the healing potential of therapeutic counselling, and in finding someone who you can trust to share any difficulty or struggle you are having in your life.
I am a qualified counsellor and have experience with bereavement issues, abuse, work and stress, anxiety, depression, long term illness, diagnosis of and carers of those with dementia, suicidal thoughts, relationships, hurt from painful memories and other issues related to these problems.
I can offer a warm welcoming and safe place to give you time and space to share what you are finding difficult in your present life. I have a base in Darlington which is safe, comfortable and a confidential environment.
Why do I believe in counselling?
I started my training in person centred counselling in 2006 after I had seen the benefits that it had had to work collegues. As a nurse for 28 years I also saw many people struggling with their issues and after a period of counselling myself which was due to a life changing adjustment. I found it to be a good, life changing experience as I was listened to without being judged and being made to feel valued and affirmed, which is an essential part of counselling. Counselling can have a impact on relationships, life decisions and general well-being. I found that with the right person even the smallest of wishes or thoughts can be important. My wish is that you are able to find the same sort of genuineness and value in the counselling you experience.
What type of issues can I bring to counselling?
You may at the present time have issues with relationships, bereavement, depression, trauma, stress, anxiety hurt from painful memories, confusion or struggling with addictions or habits which are difficult to change. These are just a few of the many reasons that people come to counselling. I am convinced that the therapeutic relationship has great potential to offer new perspectives and more knowledge about who we are. Over a period of time it can also release potential in ourselves to discover greater self worth and balance in our lives.
What kind of counselling do I do?
I am an intergrated counsellor and have been trained in person centred and cognitive behavioural therapy. I also integrate other aspects of counselling into my work. Also I have had training in bereavement counselling and childrens counselling and believe in constantly updating my practice.
However I can also work with you to explore practical methods to cope with the stress of every day difficulties such as difficult situations at home, work or in relationships.
I also use creative methods such as drawing, visualisation and other things but at your own pace and need.
Some practical points
I offer 50-60 minute sessions and my base is in Darlington town centre and has easy access if you work or live here.
Darlington is easily accessible from other areas such as Stockton, Middlesbrough, Northallerton, Richmond and Catterick as well as other places in the North East of England. There is street parking after 5pm and nearby car parks for other times.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
My qualifications are Foundation Degree in Counselling (2011) and have just finished my BA honours degree in counselling. I have also done bereavment counselling training and other short courses that have enhanced my counselling skills.
I have worked with people who are bereaved and related problems, relationship issues, anxiety, depression, diagnosis of or a carer of those with dementia, stress, work issues, hurt from painful memories, suicidal thoughts, long term illness both and other issues related to these problems. I help the client explore their issues using such practical ways such as art, journals and other methods.
I have work as a bereavement counsellor for the charity CRUSE and have worked as a general counsellor for the Tees Valley Counselling Trust, which is a generic counselling service, working with a variety of ages from late teenagers to older adults. I believe in giving people the opportunity to explore their issues and ask questions about what gives me fulfillment and the desire to know what makes them who they are.
I am also a Registered Nurse (General and Mental health) and have had 28 years experience as a nurse who helped those who had relatives with dementia and other life shortening illnesses and come to terms with this and helped them and their loved ones to live the best possible life that they could. In this role I have dealt with those who are dying and relatives that are coming to terms with this. I have also supported fellow staff through difficult periods in their lives as well as the stress that comes with the job of caring for people.
I believe in continuing professional development and ensuring that I am up to date with my practice.
As a member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) I work within their ethical framework just as a doctor or a nurse has to abide by the rules
