What is Counselling?

Counselling offers you a regular space and time to talk or think about your worries or difficulties.

It can help you to explore your feelings, and to look at ways in which you can make changes in your life.

This might include talking about your significant life events (past and present), feelings, emotions, relationships, ways of thinking and patterns of behaviour.

How can you benefit from counselling?

You may be considering counselling because you are distressed and needing help with a specific problem, but you do not have to be in a crisis to embark of counselling sessions.

You may want help to look at yourself and your issues in an open and honest way in order to gain a greater understanding of yourself, greater confidence, and empowerment to move forward with your life more effectively.

As your therapist……

The building of a relationship based on trust is one of the most important factors in the effectiveness of your counselling sessions.

As a qualified counsellor, I am trained to listen openly and empathically to you as you share experiences and concerns.

My role is not to advise you or push you into a particular course of action, or to judge you in any way.  Instead I will support you with the problems you are facing, help you identify the right course of action for you, help you develop a better understanding of yourself and others, and a better ability to manage stress and anxiety.

What can you expect from a counselling session?

At your first session you will be given information about session length and frequency, confidentiality and cancellation policy.

You will also be given information about what I can offer you as your therapist, and be asked about what you would like to get from therapy, your hopes, your goals and perhaps your fears.

During sessions you will be encouraged to explore the problems you are struggling with, and express your associated thoughts and feelings.

Your counselling process and your experience of counselling will be unique to you, and will be dependent on your own aims for the sessions, and the commitment you make to this sometimes painful, but extremely rewarding process.

My counselling room is discreet, safe and comfortable, I think of it as an oasis of calm in the centre of the town.

I have experience in working with both adults and young people.

I am also a lecturer in counselling at a further education college. I believe that my teaching work continually informs and develops my counselling skills and practice.

In addition I am part of significant research projects being conducted to evidence the benefits of therapy and to increase the accessibility of therapy.

I receive regular clinical supervision to ensure good practise and maintain ethical principles.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
