About me

Welcome to Cheshire Therapy Services and Veteran's Counselling Services

My name is Kevin Spruce and I am a qualified registered accredited counsellor that offers you a warm, safe and confidential environment to discuss your needs and to advise you whether therapy is required. Person Centred Counselling is a way for you to get back in touch with yourself. Many of us in life lose sight of who we really are due to external influences, and many of us feel confused about our identity due to major (or minor) traumas that we experience in our lives. In the warm, safe and confidential setting of my practice I offer you a peaceful place where you can discuss any issues that you choose, issues that may be difficult to discuss with your loved ones or significant others. I will always be alongside you when you are considering the thoughts/memories that you find difficult to think, or talk, about. The expert of your experiences is you, and I will engage with you from your frame of reference, therefore you will not be judged, you will be offered unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence, and the pace of therapy will be yours.

My experience of dealing with difficult and complicated issues has been developed over decades of academic research and practical experience.

My experiential background has been developed in the back drop of my experiences as a War Veteran, an Electrical and Mechanical Engineer, a Legal Advisor, a Practicing Accredited Therapist, and a Lecturer of Psychology, Sociology and Counselling Psychology. My expertise on military matters led to me being invited to be an Academic Military Advisor to Lord Ashcroft's Veteran's Transition Review 2014.

My academic and theoretical expertise has been developed from studying Abnormal Psychology since 1990, lecturing Counselling Psychology, Sociology and Psychology at level 2, 3, and 4. This gives me a firm foundation in experience and theory which I use to assist my clients to become more content with themselves and their lives. My approach will enable you to find your 'real' self.

My professional memberships include:

  • British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
  • BACP Children and Young People (BACP (CYP))
  • British Psychological Society (BPS)
  • Association of Life Coaches (ALC)
  • British Sociological Association (BSA)

For the safety of my clients, and my own safety, I follow a clear set of ethical guidelines of the above groups. My practices are run on the basis of confidentiality (there are exceptions which will be discussed in the first session), and my professional skills are kept updated through personal and professional development, supervision and attending relevant national and international conferences.

Some will view the need for a counsellor as being a weakness, however many of my clients inform me that attending counselling has made them realise that it develops an inner strength, which leads to change and contentment.   It is an inevitable part of everyone's life to experience certain situations in which we feel overwhelmed and mostly unable to cope with very well. Mostly these normal reactions to abnormal situations and require an independent individual to help make sense of the chaos which may include anxiety, depression, anger, frustration or confusion.

I also offer Supervision for Counsellors, Motivational Interview Programmes, and Mindfulness Practice for all, which can deal with any ambivalence and resistance to positive changes - i.e. feeling that therapy may work for others, but not me!

I have worked with Clients from all backgrounds, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and ages. I have addressed a wide range issues of which some include:

  • Supervision
  • Employment Issues
  • Substance Misuse
  • Bereavement and Loss
  • Exam Stress
  • Sexual Abuse
  • Domestic Violence
