About me

Welcome to Cheshire Therapy Services and Veteran's Counselling Services

My name is Kevin Spruce and I am a qualified registered accredited counsellor and I offer a warm, safe and confidential environment to discuss your needs, to advise you whether therapy is required, and what type of therapy. Person Centred Counselling is a way for you to get back in touch with yourself. Many of us in life lose sight of who we really are due to childhood and external influences. Many of us feel confused about our identity due to major (or minor) traumas that we have experienced in our lives, and many of us dismiss those traumas in our minds. I offer you a peaceful place where you can discuss any issues that you choose to discuss, issues that may be difficult to discuss with your loved ones, or significant others. I do not advise or give direction, I will reflect what you say and will always support you when you consider disclosing thoughts/memories that you find difficult to talk, or think, about. The expert of your experiences is you, and I will engage with you from your frame of reference (the way you see the world), you will never be judged, and the pace of therapy will be yours to set. I offer unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence.

My experience of dealing with difficult and complicated issues has been developed over decades of academic research and practical experience.

My experiential background has been developed in the back drop of my experiences as a War Veteran, an Electrical and Mechanical Engineer, a Legal Advisor, a Practicing Accredited Therapist, and a Lecturer of Psychology, Sociology and Counselling Psychology. My expertise on military matters led to me being invited to be an Academic Military Advisor to Lord Ashcroft's Veteran's Transition Review 2014.

My academic and theoretical expertise has been developed from studying Abnormal Psychology since 1990, lecturing Counselling Psychology, Sociology and Psychology at level 3, 4, 5 and 6. This gives me a firm foundation in theory which I use in conjunction with my practical experience as an accredtited counsellor (BACP). My approach will enable you to find your 'real' self, and to become more empowered and more content with yourself.

My professional memberships include:

  • British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
  • BACP Children and Young People (BACP (CYP))
  • British Psychological Society (BPS)
  • Association of Life Coaches (ALC)
  • British Sociological Association (BSA)

For the safety of my clients, and my own safety, I follow a clear set of ethical guidelines of the above groups. My practices are underpinned with strict confidentiality practices (there are exceptions which will be discussed in the first session). My professional skills are kept updated through personal (supervision and personal counselling) and professional development (relevant national and international conferences and workshops).

Some will view the need for a counsellor as being a weakness, however many of my clients inform me that attending counselling has made them realise that it develops an inner strength, which leads to change, empowerment and contentment.   It is an inevitable part of everyone's life to experience certain situations in which we feel overwhelmed and mostly unable to cope with very well. Mostly these normal reactions to abnormal situations and require an independent professional individual to help make sense of the chaos of our minds, which may include anxiety, depression, anger, frustration or confusion.

I also offer Supervision for Counsellors and lectures on Combat Related PTSD.

I have worked with Clients from all backgrounds, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and ages. I have addressed a wide range issues of which some include:

  • Supervision
  • Employment Issues
  • Substance Misuse
