About me

Hello, I am Kay and welcome to my profile. I have over 14 years experience as an integrative, therapeutic counsellor and clinical supervisor.

I offer online and face to face counselling for individuals, couples, young people and student counsellors.

Sometimes life is challenging and it can help to have someone to talk to. I offer a supportive, confidential and safe space for you to explore and understand any problems or concerns that you may have. My personal approach is empathic, compassionate and warm. Counselling can help you to find your own solution and feel supported, as you work towards change. The coping strategies and tools that we work with, will empower and help you to move towards a brighter future, where you feel more in control and positive. My role is to support you whilst you explore thoughts, feelings and beliefs that may be restricting you, causing unhappiness or leaving you feeling unfulfilled and confused. Sometimes we can feel generally low and unable to put our finger on the underlying problem, or perhaps you're struggling with change and feeling anxious and fearful.....counselling can help you make sense of these feelings and give you some clarity about the next step. The counselling takes place within a non-judgemental and professional therapeutic relationship where you will feel heard, validated and respected.

Many people of all ages come to see me with anxiety problems that sometimes include panic attacks and a feeling of being overwhelmed. Counselling will challenge the patterns of thinking and restricting beliefs, to help bring about a different perspective that is more helpful and beneficial for you. During this time as we manage the after effects of Covid19 our normal ways of coping may not be available to us. This can create a feeling of overwhelm, powerlessness and loss of control. All these feelings generate anxiety. Additionally, unresolved and historical issues can resurface when we are under additional stress eg grief and bereavement. Counselling can help you work through unresolved issues and establish new coping strategies based on what you do have control over. Most importantly, the techniques and coping strategies we use will be something that is always available to you.

My work experience covers a wide and diverse range of issues. Please see list below. Additionally, I have helped people to overcome problems with depression, ADHD and ASD, self esteem, self worth, abuse, anger management, family issues, confidence and problems associated with our sense of who we are, versus who we think we should be to please others or to feel accepted, worthy or loved. This conflict can cause deep unhappiness and confusion. Counselling can help to identify learned behaviours, personal triggers and patterns of relating. An understanding of these factors can enable us to begin to recognise who we truly are, and make life decisions and choices that support us.

Additionally I suppport people with  with bereavement, loss and anticipatory grief. Counselling can help at a time when everything feels like a struggle and feelings seem overwhelming and sometimes frightening. As an accredited bereavement counsellor with Cruse Bereavement Care, I am experienced in working with many different types of bereavement and loss including a child's grief, delayed and complicated grief, suicide, miscarriage and termination., redundancy and empty nest syndrome. I have experience of working in hospice and palliative care facilities.

Counselling can also help young people understand their thoughts and feelings.  Many young people are still affected by the impact of  Covid 19.  Issues with anxiety, panic attacks, feeling powerless, isolated and confused are common. I work with a range of techniques that encourage young people to explore their thoughts and feelings in a relaxed and informal way, which are both supportive and effective.

Couple and relationship counselling can help you to explore difficulties in your relationship, as well as provide insight into patterns and behaviours that may sabotage or make establishing and maintaining relationships more difficult for you. Couple counselling explores the importance of empathy and communication styles in relationships, so that there is a greater understanding of one another's needs and feelings.  I also work with individuals experiencing or recovering from abusive relationships.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy - BACP.  I am an integrative counsellor which means that I work with a number of counselling approaches including  Person Centred, Transactional Analysis, Existential, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy/CBT and Psychodynamic depending upon what is appropriate and best suits your needs.

I have a postgraduate certificate in clinical supervision and support trainee and qualified counsellors with thier counselling practice. Please see my supervision page. I offer a reduced rate for student counsellors.

My established private practice is in Bourne and within easy reach of Market Deeping and the Deepings, Stamford, Spalding, Peterborough and the surrounding areas, there is easy access and toilet facilities. My air conditioned counselling room is in a quiet, private and peaceful garden setting with access for wheelchairs.

In addition to my counselling practice I teach and have experience in providing counselling training at City College Peterborough. I am also involved with the charities Don't Lose Hope in Bourne, and Little Miracles in Peterborough.

If you would like to have a chat about starting counselling or to make an appointment, I welcome text, telephone or email enquiries. The decision to start counselling can feel daunting and unfamiliar, and so I am happy to address any  concerns or questions you may have prior to your first session. Weekly or fortnightly appointments are available plus monthly top up sessions.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

A few of my Counselling Testimonials:

Kay, thank you for everything this year. You have completely changed my life
and helped me see myself and life in general so differently - in the most transformational way. I am so grateful for your incredible support, encouragement and kindness.
Private Counselling Client - December 2020

Kay, you helped me to come to terms with my experience of parenting and courage to leave a narcissistic relationship and start over on my own. You made a difference! I am now a confident, happy and boundaried woman. I will always be
grateful to you.
Private Counselling Client - November 2020

"Kay, thank you for all the work you have done with myself and us as a couple. We are both so very grateful. Your caring, professional and very kind manner has always been appreciated."  Counselling Client February 2019

"First rate counselling from a very kind, supportive and experienced lady! I would highly recommend Kay if you are needing help with anxiety, self esteem, confidence and self worth issues. Private Counselling Client -  April 2019

"Kay helped myself and my partner during a very difficult time in our relationship. Following several challenging life events that had left our relationship struggling and our ability to communicate at an all time low, Kay helped us to rediscover the love, friendship and attraction that had brought us together and helped us to work through our differences. This helped us to rebuild our relationship and we have just celebrated our 20 year anniversary! I'm can honestly say without Kay's help I'm not sure we would have made it! Private Counselling Client - June 2018

I went to see Kay for help with anxiety and depression. I had seen other counsellors before over the years but Kay's calm and supportive approach really struck a chord with me. I felt completely understood and accepted and this helped me to understand and work through some of the issues that had been making me feel so helpless and unhappy for so many years. I feel like a new person thanks to Kay's experience and invaluable help.
Private Counselling client - July 2017

"I was referred to Kay for pre-bereavement counselling when I was struggling to cope with the news that my sister was terminally ill. She gave me a wonderful, safe space to let go of a mass of confusing feelings and she helped me to focus on ways of understanding and coping with what was happening. Kay's calm, caring and person-centred approach has made an enormous difference to the way I coped with the whole experience."
Private Counselling Client - April 2012

"Kay is an experienced and well-qualified counsellor, with years of counselling experience working with a variety of issues and problems. If you are looking for top quality counselling from a generous, supportive, technically-gifted and professional counsellor, look no further. I can heartily recommend Kay - she is the real deal!"
Private Counselling Client - October 2015

"Kay helped me following a cancer diagnosis at the age of 26, when I thought my world was collapsing around me. The counselling Kay provided really helped me to cope and to give me another perspective, she helped me to realise that it was OK to feel scared, angry and frustrated and to recognise that my own feelings were important. I felt totally supported and understood by Kay which made me feel less alone and able to manage."
