Katy Humphreys Intergrative Counsellor and CBT Therapist
Specialist Therapist for Children and Adults.
Welcome to my profile, I am a professional, friendly Counsellor working with Children and adults from the age of 5 years upwards. I have experience working with children in schools and colleges l have my own private practice where l work with both children and adults therapeutically.
I have a wealth of experience working within the Health and social care sector and Education and really enjoy the work I do. I have a specialist interest in working with people who have Disabilities and difficulties such as Autism and mild to severe learning difficulties.
I work using an intergrative approach with a Person centred base. Person centred Therapy is based on Carl Rogers's theory that everyone has the answers they need somewhere within themselves. Person Centred counselling is not about telling you what to do but helps to facilitate changes that you want to make and provides a space each week where you can explore your own thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
As an Integrative Therapist I work with each person as an individual and adapt the techniques used to the needs of each client. If a more directive approach is needed I will work with you to incorporate Cognitive Behaviour interventions and other techniques during the sessions depending on your individual needs, personality and aims of therapy.
I am also trained to use Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) which can be particularly useful for treating things such as Anxiety Disorders,Anger Management,Eating disorders and any Negative Thought Patterns or cycles.
Whatever the difficulty is you are experiencing Integrative therapy is effective at getting to the root of the problem and making fast changes in your life.
In addition to my counselling background ,I have many years of experience, working with people who have a disabilities, such as Autism and mild to severe learning difficulties/disabilities. This is a specialist area of work where communicating at the appropriate level is essential to enable counselling to be effective. I have experience using a wide range of communication aids such as PECS and pictorial information which can make counselling accessible for people who may otherwise struggle to engage in therapy . If you have a learning difficulty or a re a parent /carer please get in touch to see how therapy may help.
Can counselling help me?
It can be difficult to know if therapy can help you, especially if you have not been before. Even picking up the phone to make an appointment can be difficult.
Coming for Counselling does not mean that there is anything wrong with you, many people find it helpful at some point in their life .
Below is a list which may help you decide if you can benefit from counselling or CBT. We can also discuss this further in our first meeting .
Counselling may help you if you
*Have unresolved issues from the past
*Are feeling the loss of someone close
*Feel Sad,Anxious or Depressed
*Feel the need to always please others
*Have experience a lot of change
*Want help to manage your Anger
*Feel something isn't quite right but your unsure what or why
*Having lots of negative thoughts that are affecting how you feel
*Have difficulty forming or maintaining healthy attachment and relationships
There are also many other reason why people come to Counselling and although talking to family and friends can often help it is not the same as going for therapy where the time and space is dedicated purely for you.
Why choose me?
I understand that finding the right therapist is really important and you need to feel at ease to build up a trusting relationship . I work in a non judgemental way and offer a safe, warm ,comfortable place where we can work together.
I am often told that I have a 'knack' of making people feel comfortable which I'm sure you will find too . I will work with you as an equal to make sure that you get the most from your therapy session.
I will return your call or email within 24 hours of you contacting me and always work flexibly to fit around my clients needs.
How long will I need to come for therapy?
The number of sessions that people come to counselling varies from person to person. You can expect to start feeling differently from the first session and many clients find that 5 - 6 sessions is enough while others may want to continuing for a longer periods or time and to help maintain positive mental health.
If you would like to chat about counselling before making an appointment please feel free to contact me by email or telephone.
Therapy for children
I work with children age 5 years upwards and work using a more creative approach that is suitable and appropriate for the age of the individual child. I have worked with children and teenagers experiencing a range of difficulties such as Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder ,and Depression as well as children who have experienced a bereavement or loss and who have attachment disorders.
When working with children I will liaise closely with the parents /carers whilst maintaining the child's confidentiality.
If you are a parent / carer or provider looking for a therapist for a child please feel free to contact me for an initial chat.
