About me

The first session is free.

The first session gives you an opportunity to talk with me and see if I am the right counsellor for you. I have over ten years of experience, working with a wide range of issues. The first session would give you an idea of what a counselling session might be like and how we might work together through the issues that are troubling you. It also gives you an opportunity to ask any questions you may have before starting counselling without obligation. I am currently offering counselling online via Zoom video link which seems to be working well and proving convenient for many people. I am also booking sessions in person in the centre of Wallingford.

Why Counselling?

I understand that there may be times in life when we feel stuck with persistently troubling thoughts, emotions or behaviours which we can not seem to change. Sometimes relationships do not work the way we would like them to, or certain people trigger feelings in us which seem out of all proportion.

Perhaps you are feeling overwhelmed by anxiety, stress, anger or depression. It may be that you are suffering with a deep sense of loss, may be the loss of a close relationship or a loss of purpose, self esteem or identity. You might be good at offering others help and caring for their needs but struggle to value your own needs and treat yourself with the same compassion. Trying to unpick the problem can seem confusing and hard to know where to begin. Talking to people you know, about very personal issues can feel too risky, awkward or embarrassing.

So what might counselling offer?

Speaking from my own experience of having counselling, I recognise that understanding ourselves and past experiences, valuing and accepting who we are can help us to find relief from inner turmoil, re-evaluate relationships and restore our sense of purpose so we may fulfil our potential.

My counselling approach.

I would like to offer you the time, space and support, away from your everyday life and relationships, to explore the issues that are troubling you. You will have the opportunity to talk in confidence and without judgment. As we reflect together on your thoughts, feelings and behaviours we will explore the changes you would like to see in your life. As you unpack your thoughts, we will consider the thought patterns you have developed that may be unhelpful to you and may be gently challenged. You may want to explore difficult memories to release buried feelings and find a clearer perspective on past experiences. The insights you gain may enable you to feel more confident about yourself and your own resources to bring about the changes you would like.

We will explore your issues at the pace and depth that best suits you. I use an integrative model of counselling that incorporates humanistic approaches,  aspects of psychodynamics, cognitive behaviour therapy and where appropriate creative therapies.

If you prefer to meet in person, I counsel in a pleasant room in the centre of Wallingford, accessible to bus routes and close to Wood Street car park.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
