About me

Welcome to my profile - and thank you for your interest.

I’ve been a Counsellor for 25 years and have a Senior BACP Accreditation, which denotes my depth and breadth of experience. If you’re trying to choose a counsellor, here’s some information in my profile below, which may help you to decide. If you’re unsure about anything, do email me.

What can you expect from me?

Respectful empathic attention.

Warmth, Compassion, and Honesty.

Help in working out your therapy needs, whether it be short-term problem-solving or longer-term, more in-depth work.

A creative combination of listening, talking, support, challenge, and encouragement.

A collaborative, trusting, therapeutic relationship.

An opportunity to express yourself free from judgement .

Confidentiality.

Experience tells me that as a potential client, you’ll be searching for something unique to you. Please feel that you can ring to talk to me about any questions that you have, and how I may be able to help you.

When and Where?

Up until the pandemic I worked in two locations; near Westbury in Wiltshire, and in St Andrews, North Bristol.  I am still working remotely in both but I am now only seeing clients in person in Wiltshire. The room that I work in there is spacious, well-ventilated and set aside for counselling. It is quiet and discreet.

At present I am therefore only be available on a video-link to any new clients from Bristol or further afield

I offer private appointments  between 9.30 and 5.00 pm, on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.  When you first phone me, I’ll suggest that you come to see me for a non-chargeable half-hour, so we can meet and decide whether we'd like to work together.

How long is a session and how many sessions?

We’ll meet for up to 60 minutes, usually weekly; more frequently if necessary. The number of sessions varies according to each individual’s need. At our first meeting we’d probably agree to meet for between 6 and 10 sessions, followed by a review.

Money

I ask all my clients, if they’re able, to pay my full fee. This allows me to offer some reduced-fee places.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

Training and qualifying as a professional counsellor, becoming accredited by the BACP, and then attaining Senior Accreditation, has been a rigorous process, and I have to undergo annual re-accreditation.

This involves my constantly monitoring my skills and practice, by use of supervision and continuing professional development, and abiding  by the BACP's code of ethics and practice (see website www.bacp.co.uk). It includes respecting and encouraging you to make your own decisions, not disclosing or misusing what I know about your life, and not knowingly harming you in any way. All of this is aimed at providing a professional safeguard to you as my client.

Is counselling for you?

Sometimes people say to me, " There are so many others who are worse off than I am; I really shouldn't complain!" My response is that no-one should feel that they have to wait for life to become unbearable before seeking help. It would be very unusual for any of us to have lives free of adversity, distress or anxiety, and when your troubles can’t be resolved by support from friends, family of a self-help book, you may feel lonely and frightened. That’s when a qualified and experienced therapist may be the answer.

Counselling offers you…………..

  • Somewhere safe and confidential to tackle your problems and address your fears.
  • Support while you work out what changes may be necessary, at your pace.
  • A process that is at once voluntary yet committed, deliberate yet unrehearsed, structured yet unrestricted.
  • Strategies and tools for dealing with life’s challenges with confidence.
  • The chance to find ways that you can support yourself – to become your own therapist.
