Kate Lewis - Dramatherapist & Systemic Practitioner (HCPC registered)
I am a Dramatherapist. What's that? Well, to start with, I think it's helpful to say that Dramatherapy does not require you to be 'good at', or experienced in, performance or acting!
What Dramatherapy is about is using our innate creativity as a way of exploring and reflecting on what troubles us - and yes, you do have innate creativity! By approaching things in a creative way we trigger the part of the brain that doesn't rely on logic, words and obvious meaning and allow metaphor, story and imagination to help us process and make sense and connections.
In Dramatherapy I will work with you to find the most suitable medium and approach for you - you will not be thrown into most people's nightmare - a 'role-play' or some kind of acting exercise - our work is more varied and subtle than this!
I am also a Systemic Practitioner. This means I work therapeutically with individuals to enable the use of their relationships with their families and significant others as a resource to reduce stress and difficulties for all family members. Systemic practice holds dear the notion that therapist and client work together and that the therapist does not 'know best' - hence this work respects the expertise each individual holds about their own life situation, whilst requiring the therapist to be curious and challenging to affect the change required. I also use some creative approaches in this work but it can be more talk-based and directional than Dramatherapy.
I work from the Bay Therapy Centre in Lady Bay, West Bridgford, Nottingham.
Training, qualifications & experience
I graduated with a Masters in Dramatherapy in 2009 and, since then, have worked in the NHS in CAMHS (The Child & Adolescent Mental Health Service) - as well as at the University of Derby in the Student Wellbeing Service. I have a small private practice based in Lady Bay, West Bridgford.
I have also trained as a Systemic Practitioner and have an Advanced Certificate in Systemic Thinking & Practice.
Areas of counselling I deal with
- Low self-confidence
- Low self-esteem
- Personality disorders
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Relationship issues
I believe it is important to 'shop around' when looking for a therapist, so I offer an initial meeting free of charge. This will not be a therapy session, but an opportunity to put a name to a face and for us both to ask questions of each other to get a sense of whether we want to work together.
Fees: £50 per 50/55 minute session.
