About me

I am a qualified and experienced psychotherapeutic counsellor and supervisor, and I work using a variety of approaches.

I offer either limited-term or open-ended therapy; we can discuss the best starting point for you when we first meet. I have undergone specialist training to work not only in a traditional face-to-face setting, but also online (which can involve communicating through email, Instant Messaging (IM) or through video-link). Online therapy can sometimes provide opportunities for people to engage in counselling who might otherwise find this difficult for either practical or emotional reasons. I have been involved in establishing and managing online counselling services and have several years' experience of working in this way.

I offer face-to-face counselling and supervision to anyone who can travel to my consulting room, which is located close to Chichester and provides a safe and confidential place for us to meet. Online counselling and supervision are naturally not limited by geographical location and I will be able to work with you wherever you may be, as long as you have internet access (this can be especially helpful if you travel a lot). Security and confidentiality are paramount when working online and if you are seeking this kind of support, I will discuss these things with you in detail when you make initial contact.

Whether we meet in person or online, the relationship that we create between us is at the heart of all the therapeutic approaches I use. If we choose to work together, we will collaborate closely to explore, reflect on and strive to understand better both past and current experiences and challenges. Through this gentle process of discovery, we can explore ways of enabling change and experiencing relief from emotional pressures and pain, especially those that may be hard to manage alone.

I have been working as a psychotherapeutic counsellor for over ten years and have worked in a number of settings, including local authority groups and charitable organisations. I have worked in Higher Education, counselling students first at Sussex University and subsequently at the University of Portsmouth.  I have been privileged to work with individuals of all ages and from a very wide range of backgrounds and parts of the world.

I have also worked as a teacher in different settings, including nursery and primary education, further and higher education and therapy training organisations. As part of an inspirational team working in Social and Caring Services in West Sussex, I established a respite scheme for families whose lives are impacted by having a child with a disability. I became very aware of the particular needs of families impacted by disability and I offer informed therapeutic support for those in this situation. I have also worked in a pain clinic setting in the NHS, where I gained some insights into the psychological impact of experiencing long-term or chronic physical pain. I have become aware of the value of mindfulness as one of many approaches to addressing both physical and psychological pain and suffering and I often teach mindfulness techniques within my work, either to groups or as part of one-to-one sessions. Mindfulness plays an important role in my own life and is part of my own daily routine.

I am also able to offer therapeutic workshops on a variety of themes (for example, overcoming depression or anxiety, working with low self-esteem, exploring relationship difficulties or managing stress) to larger groups or organisations, which may be either psycho-educational or experiential, or perhaps a combination of both. Sometimes a group setting can provide a particularly supportive place to learn not only from the facilitator but also from others who are experiencing similar feelings and challenges.

I am always happy to discuss your situation and needs with you either on the telephone, by email or at an initial, no-obligation meeting in person. Please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
